| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Around The Square
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I ...

$10.15 "Captivating composition of contrast. Techno beat, ominous, chilling vocals and mood. Marvelous gargling voice, minor key, MAJOR REACTION. Hypnotic chorus. All this to present a rose! Very clever! I kept waiting for the rip roaring guitar solo, but the song didn't wilt. Excellent!""Cool, reminds me of the Cure. I like the mood that is painted here. Cool vocals with nice production. very interesting Bowie like at times." 'Far from the Cold' was recorded by engineer Matt Thorne @ MT Studios in Burbank, California. The band utilized a vast array of vintage Marshalls, 80's sequencers, Neve/API pre's, Blueface Telefunken U47's, and a state of the art logic/PT set up to create the retro, yet modern sound heard throughout the album. If you love Depeche, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy - this record will undoubtedly feel familiar at first listen.Derek Ian - Vocals, Bass GuitarMike Kuz - Lead GuitarSabra Saber - Programmer Demon Bros. music is characterized by a dark retro-rock sound woven with sultry vocals, haunting guitar melodies, and entrancing beats.
