From The Heart album
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, ...

| | Steve Dalachinsky I Thought It Was The End Of The World Then The End Of The World Happened Again CD (2002)
From The Heart music CDs
$18.25 This album was recorded live on November 12, 2001. It constitutes New York poet Steve Dalachinsky and Italian-born-turned-New-York-City-resident drummer Frederico Ughi's response to the atmosphere reigning in the city after the terrorist attack that brought the World Trade Center down two months earlier. The press release describes the set as "improvised words and music," but at least some parts had to be planned out or scripted -- the timing in "We Play Just Like Dominoes" is simply too perfect. The short CD (36 minutes) opens with Dalachinsky reciting a cappella a poem titled "The Submarine Kyrsk," this one obviously not improvised (it is also the only text reproduced in the booklet). Then Ughi starts to provide light textures: bowed cymbals, scratched skins, very occasional rumbles on the drums, plus light live sampling. His playing never steps in front of the poet's voice. Tracks two to seven form a cohesive whole. In each one the poet develops new ideas, but a handful of punchy sentences come back regularly, almost insanely, losing power with each iteration, not unlike the images of the plane crashes seen over and over on television. I Thought It Was the End of the World, Then the End of the World Happened Again is captivating but hardly an album you would describe as "pleasing" or would go back to on a regular basis. On a side note, the CD has been mastered at a relatively low level, making it difficult to focus on Dalachinsky's words in some places. ~ François Couture

| | McGraw Twinz Forced Entry CD (2005)
From The Heart album
$13.89 Based in the Rock, the dynamic duo the McGraw Twinz are a hip-hop musical sensation with a soulful flavor that incorporates contemporary gospel, jazz, rap, and a taste of R&B. Their musical careers began in the early 80's in the "Dirty South" in the twin cities, Helena and West Helena, Arkansas on the school grounds where Linda a.k.a. 'Ore00' would freestyle to Gwen's a.k.a. 'Double' human beat box challenging other rappers. They quickly became well known for their 'gut-busting' lyrical flow and hip beats. After hearing a radio commercial for 'The Really Big Shoe', a local talent contest held at Phillips Community College, their fans encouraged them to audition, thus the Rappin Twins was born. Though they didn't take home the trophy, the roars from the crowd inspired them to persist and perfect their craft. With their hearts and minds set on being big rap stars the Twinz adopted the By-Any- Means- Necessary philosophy exposing them to a very promiscuous life. They relocated to southwest Little Rock in the late 80's to live with their mother blocks away from the projects known as Sin City where they drew crowds of youngsters that loved their flow. Unfortunately the negative press that gangster rap was receiving in the media changed the perception of all forms of rap music for some. Rapping at school amongst large crowds of their peers had come to be perceived as a disturbance. School officials immediately broke up large crowds that gathered daily to hear them rap-battle during recess. Misunderstood by school authorities they developed a reputation for creating havoc ultimately resulting in them being placed in Stepping Stones, a home for troubled teens. During this intervention, they focused on more constructive goals for the future which in due course influenced the essence of their lyrics. Determined not to give up on their childhood dreams and the music that they had come to love; they began writing original songs with hopes of one day getting signed to a major label. While gospel rap slowly began to emerge and hit the airwaves; they pressed ...
