TURKU's third full-length CD, Ozlem, evolved over a period of four years, following the release of "Nomads of the Silk Road" in 2000. The title track, Ozlem, was concieved by Ted Monnich at an annual Pennsylvania festival, Pennsic 29. Ted and Farzad composed its passionate arrangement, in a Tashkent hotel, while on tour in Uzbekistan in 2001, only a week before the World Trade Center disaster.In the following years TURKU worked through the album's songs and arrangements while touring across North America. The resulting collection of songs is remeniscent of their first album, "Alleys of Istanbul's," energy. Ozlem is heavy on Turkish melodies that speak to the heart and inspire the soul. The word "Ozlem" in Turkish means "longing." The intensity and emotions of this album shine forth through its songs, eliciting a miriad of emotional responses from the listener. One thing is certain with TURKU, however. The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state.
