Chicago is the place to be for someone who loves the blues. For musicians like Mike Darak, the blues scene in Chicago is a proving ground of sorts, a place to prove yourself to a very discerning crowd. While Mike has played the local clubs, his musical tastes are not just limited to the blues. In 2003, Mike independently released the debut cd Nineteen Ten. The cd was well received and established Mike as a singer/songwriter worthy of attention. The material showcased Mike's various musical influences and featured his expressive guitar playing. Songs from the album were played not only in the U.S, but as far as Australia. Eager to follow up Nineteen Ten, Mike has just finished up studio work on the tracks for Ashland. Featuring eight original songs, Ashland displays continued artistic growth and ventures into some new musical territories. The journey continues......stay tuned. | | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Ashland songs
$8.49 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. There is even a "Joy To The World" medley mixing the old and the new--the traditional ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Ashland album
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of ...

| | Girls Live At The Rathskeller: 05/17/79 CD (2002)
Ashland CD music
$9.85 The particular band of Girls -- there having been others over the moons -- got together as part of the late-'70s Boston scene. Their only recorded work was a single on Pere Ubu's Hearthan label and a couple of compilation tracks later, so Live at the Rathskeller: 05/17/79 serves as the best document of this often grand group. There's a giddy good humor about this recording that's well-worth the appreciating, all while not sacrificing what sounds like a loud-as-hell aesthetic that wasn't quite punk or heavy metal or whatever, just its own good place. If anything, like Pere Ubu, the group was dedicated to modern garage rock that took the past as a starting point and then went forward (as opposed to simply re-creating it). Probably the band's best posthumous claim to fame was Robin Amos' eventual work in Cul de Sac, and here he certainly does show his love for both herky-jerky art rock grooves and more new wavish mania, offering up sometimes-twisted solos. It's not quite Brian Eno in Roxy Music, say, but it's close enough to claim clear inspiration, as "Okey Dokey," "Jeffrey I Hear You" (with two completely frenetic breakdowns), and "These Things" demonstrate. Guitarist/singer Mark Dagley and singer/drummer Daved Hild lead the group through some straight-ahead chargers like "Just Got Back" (at all of 50 seconds) and "I Heard Joe Talking." Yet, even the seemingly "normal" tracks usually have something happen to them along the way, whether due to Amos or the overall performance. Thus the stop/start "Stiff Bird," with its sheets of keyboard noise in between the staccato verses. The fidelity of the performance is mid-fi at the least, but the energy comes through strong, while Byron Coley's appreciative liner notes and a radio interview with the band help flesh out an enjoyable release. ~ Ned Raggett

| | Blister Rust Who's Gonna Scratch Your Itch CD (2000)
Ashland album
$12.69 Metal has a new godson and Blister Rust is the freak's name.Their album "Who's Gonna Scratch Your Itch?!!" was the FIFTH most added album nationwide on college radio the second week of December 1998 (beating out Metallica (#10) - see CMJ Radio 200 Adds 12/14/98). "Blister Rust comes across like a garage band on steroids...a most entertaining release." - Renegade MagazineThis says a lot about Who's Gonna Scratch Your Itch?!! Although it is a loud and aggressive album, it does grow on you.The album is a tornado that opens up with the song V-8 - it rings out with 3 notes which are followed by the immortal words of every philosopher since Aristotle, "I just need a place to lift my leg...just one place." - a releasing growl - then a solid mosh pit guitar riff and a beat to kick open your front door to and set the front lawn ablaze. It is no wonder MP3.com picked this song as the Featured Hardcore Metal Song from 5/15/99 to 6/15/99 on its site (V-8 was downloaded an average of once every 10 minutes for the month)! The songs AGE (a tank), Nail Me Down (a classic metal tune guaranteed to make you drive faster to work), Storyteller (lots of changes inspired by band's all over the rock spectrum) and Cleansing add plenty of fuel to this loud and aggressive album.Pure unadulterated heavy rock with a message. This album has enough energy for everyone and then some. The slower more melodic tunes on the album - Recycle Me, Winter and Answer to You - all have different feels and memorable hooks. Mrs. Christ on the other hand is an upbeat animal with a strong message about living it the fuck up and getting on with life. The last song on the album, NBC goes off the deep end and sounds like a heavy late night talk show opener until ...
