"Witness to the Monkey" is like a tree. It's like a bird and a stone and a rock. Here we are: Amanda Jo Williams (vocals, rhythm guitar), Paul McMahon (lead guitar, background vocals), Drew North (bass, some background vocals), Mackenzie Parker (drums). If you read the description of "Saves the World Again," you'll find some words for "Witness to the Monkey." It's one of those half-mornings so I'll say we are a tree and a bush, growing out of swamp juice behind my mama's house in Georgia. She was so beautiful at my age. She's still beautiful but there's one fact about her that makes me mad. But please people, don't let politics separate you from anyone, especially your own kind. We're in the process of building a fan base: we've played in NYC a few times, got a great response, so now with our new confidence, be on the look out and hearing boat for us. You'll know we're coming up from behind when you can make out the clippety-clop of our sound. | | Jeff Laine Long Way To Go CD (2003)
Witness To The Monkey CD music
$11.15 Never one to let a creative urge go unattended, Jeff Laine has emerged from a year in the studio with a new CD: Long Way To Go. Produced by Magic Kramer (Ray Charles, Michael Jackson) and supported by musicians culled from the bands of Lucinda Williams, Melissa Etheridge, MC5's Wayne Kramer and Willie Nelson, these brand new recordings capture Jeff Laine at his best. For those who've followed his career closely, this CD fulfills their loftiest expectations. For the uninitiated listening for the first time, reserve a place in the CD changer-you've got some catching up to do.Born in Detroit, Jeff was raised on Motown and the MC5. He relentlessly badgered his parents to get him a guitar. They relented shortly after his eighth birthday. He soon began playing in rock bands with kids from the neighborhood. One stormy afternoon, Jeff and former bandmate Doug Fieger drove a red Karman Ghia to Los Angeles. Neither came back. Fieger formed a band called the Knack which produced one of the 80s biggest hit records for Capitol ("My Sharona"). Jeff came under the tutelage of Grammy winning blues and soul legend, Etta James. Her advice was simple and direct..."It ain't if you're good. It ain't if you're bad...it's if you're happening."Etta's guidance was not lost on Jeff when he became lead singer and principal songwriter for sophisto-punk band Hollywood Underground. Their live performances became the stuff of legend as much for what happened off the stage as on it. When his first wife, super model and fashion designer Mag de Laine lost her life to cancer, Jeff fell into a manic state of disorienting depression. He took to living on the fringe of sexual propriety and documented his experiences in a series of graphic songs. Soon, a self produced EP began getting airplay on LA radio as Hollywood Underground's loyal, but twisted legion of fans grew dramatically. At this point Apache/Capitol Records, stepped into the picture, signed the band, and quickly began hyping it as the next "can't miss" sensation to hit pop music. The first single, Jeff's autobiographical tale of incest and lust, was aptly titled "Blue Taboo", but mainstream radio programmers felt it was a little to edgy for their playlists. When they had the same reaction ...

| | Alice Bierhorst Earthbound CD (2003)
Witness To The Monkey songs
$13.69 East Village musician Bierhorst shows promise on this LP of spare but insistent, confident folk-pop. Her voice and some of her songs (such as the fanciful title track) remind in good ways of Joni Mitchell -- who is undoubtedly one of her influences. But unlike most girls with guitars who ply the Mitchell path, Bierhorst has an engaging voice not immediately compromised by such comparison, and her more strident acoustic bashes, such as the two-chord puzzler "At Sunset," show she's got some real punk spunk in her as well. The production is particularly good, making her six-string ring brightly on the more pleasant tunes and giving it a more unforgiving harshness on the rockier numbers. Keep an eye on this one, purveyors of this kind of singer/songwriter pop. ~ Jack Rabid
"Earthbound" has been brewing for nearly a decade and includes many of Bierhorst's finest songs. Playing all the instruments herself and recorded to 4-track, this album is by far her most lyrical and exposed, along the lines of Springsteen's "Nebraska" or early Mary Lou Lord and Cat Power. The bluesy "Spring" opens the album on a dark note, recreating the moment love breaks ...
| | Harris & Hill Teach Me To Breathe CD (2004)
Witness To The Monkey album
$12.69 "Teach Me to Breathe is about an awakening" says singer-songwriter Rob Hill. "It's about learning to be alive." Hill teamed up with singer Derek Harris to form this Olympia, Washington based duo in 2003, and Harris & Hill released the Teach Me to Breathe CD in April of 2004. For both it has been a reconnection with music and spirit. Though the spiritual aspects of the music are pretty subtle, the spiritual motivation behind the making of the album is not. "I got to a point in my life where I was re-examining and I realized that it's all about making the most of your time and your gifts," says Hill of his self-proclaimed mid-life crisis. "And I was convinced that God would have been kind of ticked off at me for not making the most of the gifts I've been given." And the reason he was wasting his talents, he admits, was fear. "I think fear is at the core of a lot of unhappiness," he says. "And I'm just now learning to trust my dreams and to believe that everything will be okay. The worst that can happen is that I'm going to have a great time doing what I love." For Harris, the music is a return to a first love. Raised in a very musical family, he was performing his mom's original songs in front of hundreds of people as a child in Idaho. He's since dabbled in various singing projects, acting, modeling (he was crowned Mr. Elma in his senior year in high school in Elma, Washington - a VERY small town, Hill is quick to point out), and military service, including a combat tour in the first Persian Gulf War. The country-twinged songwriting of Rob Hill is a leap from Harris' more rock-leaning musical tastes, but Harris says it's working for him. "A lot of the music we're doing is stuff I wouldn't even have listened to a couple of years ago," he says. "But when you want to play music where lyrics and harmony matter, the best place to find it is in modern country music. I find myself listening to a lot of country ...
