REVIEWS"a musician of extraordinary musical talent..." Jazz Queensland, 2004"some of the best instrumental talent we got" Rave magazine, 1997"innovative and accomplished." Courier Mail, Sept 12, 2002"Toby Wren's guitar, almost keyboard like in its melodic lines was no slouch when fast & tight was called for." Pemberton Review, August 20th, 2004"the composer revealed a high level of talent, rippling out high-speed single notes and the occasional well-placed chord" The Adelaide Advertiser, August 20th, 2004 Toby is an emerging force on the Australian jazz scene. His approach, while firmly based in the jazz guitar tradition incorporates multiple influences from the avant-garde to Indian classical music. Trained as a composer, Toby has had works performed by many of Australia's great orchestras and broadcast on national radio and his guitar playing keeps him in demand as a freelance player. In early 2005 he will be recording a CD with the Toby Wren Trio and touring nationally."I formed babel to play really complex difficult stuff. It was a way of stretching my playing ability and pushing the limits of ensemble playing. As it developed it became a way of testing unusual musical structures and approaches to incorporating improvisation in a very meaningful and structured way. I was very fortunate to be able to work with some amazing musicians, who stuck with me for the, literally, years it took to be able to play some of the material! These musicians have all gone on to be some of the driving forces in Australian music - Grant Collins is one of the world's foremost drumset artists (www.grantcollins.com), Nick Aggs is the leader of Afro-dizzi-act and the Neighborhood Groove Collective and Andrew Shaw is the hardest working bass player in Brisbane and the president of Jazz Queensland. All of them are exceptional in their own rights. This recording [fat lip 81] caught the band at its peak. We were helped out by an Arts Queensland grant so the whole process was a joy. The music couldn't have come together better, and the response has been terrific."Please visit me on my website, where I have some more downloads, info, lessons and scores of my work and contact me if you want to talk music. | | Steve Tyrell This Time Of The Year CD (2002)
Fat Lip 81 songs
$6.09 (MP3 Available for Download) Steve Tyrell has attracted enough attention for his two regular albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, that he is almost beyond journalists' usual tack of describing a new singer's voice by who he sounds like; pretty soon, they'll be saying that other singers sound like him. But it remains true that if you have never heard him but you are familiar with Dr. John, your first reaction upon hearing him is likely to be that you are listening to Dr. John. Well, maybe a younger Dr. John, and one whose accent isn't quite as swampy. But the basic elements -- the grit and gravel in the tone, the slurred, deep South phrasing -- are much the same. Of course, Tyrell comes by the sound of his voice honestly, hailing from Houston, TX, and boasting a musical career (albeit, behind the scenes) as long as Dr. John's. But it remains true that Dr. John got there first, and so the comparison remains inevitable. As on his regular albums, Tyrell lines up a cast of jazz heavyweights for these small-group sessions, allowing plenty of space for soloing, particularly by trumpeter ...
| | Breetles Writerscramp CD (2000)
Fat Lip 81 album
$7.49 The Breetles are basically New Jersey native Chris Breetveld, who's occasionally helped out by various pals--DIY auteur R. Stevie Moore takes co-lead vocals on the opening track, "I Don't Live Here"--but who recorded most of the terrific WRITERSCRAMP on his own. Breetveld takes most of his inspiration from the group who inspired his band name, along with the Who and the Kinks, and the soaring "My Sense of Wonder" pays direct lyrical tribute to all three.
However, Breetveld's not a mere revivalist, in the manner of Myracle Brah; his British Invasion-derived melodies are laced with oddball lyrical concepts--"Please Send Boat" is a daffy, surreal tune about a flood--cool weird noises and a playful, try anything once attitude. WRITERSCRAMP may not be for everyone, but it's an interesting, unique take on power pop conventions.
The critics speak on The Breetles' WRITERSCRAMP: "...a lot of fun...Breetveld comes across as an American, more power-pop (Martin) Newell.....immediately, drop-dead catchy..." - Jack Rabid, THE BIG TAKEOVER issue 46 May 2000"...one record you'll never forget. ... wildly imaginative and decidedly quirky " - Ken Sharp, FRIDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK May 2000 THE ROCK REPORT "...an artist whose timeless influences he has equaled, if not surpassed." - Roy Abrams, The INSIDE CONNECTION April 2000 "...a delightful record, full of benevolent eccentricities that you'll never tire of." - David Bash, DISCOVERIES"....as solid and charming a full length recording as has been released thus far in 2000." - Rick Schadlebauer, AMPLIFIER #18 "...odd, witty, at times brilliant melodic punk/pop...." - Peter Spencer, The STAR-LEDGER 4/16/00 "... breezy melodies, billowy harmonies and extravagant orchestrations.... one of the more robust and refreshing albums in recent memory." - Lee Zimmerman, GOLDMINE 4/21/00"...a true pop music genius....." - Paul Anderson, ENTERTAINMENT TODAY/ & CONSUMABLE "Easily one of the best pop CDs thus far released this year. This is a giant blast of sincere and pleasing melodies and superb arrangements." - bABYsUE Magazine"a ...

Fat Lip 81 music CDs
$20.25 HELLO ALL ! Another CD completed with some new, original songs and some old standards done in a slightly different way. I hope everyone likes this new CD. My inspiration has always been from God above and my family and friends.I also had a lot of great talent on this one as my background musicians. I am thankful to all. You will see some new originals. "Palpitations", the title song, is a ballad with some R and B undertones. "Joey B", is a bluesy type song with a story to tell. And "By The Cross On The Wall" is a Christian songdone in a gospel way. Also original are "French Twist" and"Back To Your Heart", both nice swing type numbers. There is a wonderful version of "What A Difference A Day Made" with a bit of Spanish Guitar and Spanish lyrics. And my last song I dedicate to all those who were involved in the many natural disasters in the past few years, especially the survivors of Hurricanes Dennis,Rita and Katrina. "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans" is a great old song done in a speak-easy style. So along with all the other songs on this CD, there are a variety of different styles, all in the jazz mode, but with subtle nuances that can appeal to many different tastes. I now have a piano player and ...
