| | Yaks In Vain CD Yaks Discography of CDs
Although In Vain is their first album under this moniker, the Yaks are a duo whose collaboration intersects the work of the Latin jazz combo the Irradicats as well as the phantom hi-jinx of Fiction. The intuitive Steve Glover mans the drums on this collection of songs. His credits include work with Fat City, Mission Creep, Holoscene, and the Owls in addition to the groups listed above. Glover consistently identifies the specific style needed by a song or to suit the style of a group, and transitions effortlessly between a myriad of indy rock nuances to bebop and Latin clave genres as needed.Dave Lawson provides the rest of the instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals. He doesn't care to comment further on the songs or music, thinking that if they're not self-explanatory enough, his further explanations won't help. His experience, however, include international tours through the U.S., Europe, and Canada, a B.A. in Guitar Performance, 15 years of recording and a sporadic decade of performances throughout club scene (and dives) in California. The Yaks are accompanied by critically-acclaimed cellist Elaine Kreston on the tracks "Soul Waits" and "Healing Word." More information about Ms. Kreston (who has studied with Yo-Yo Ma and other masters) can be found at www.elainekreston.com . Kreston's group TranslucenT has their new CD "Chromosphere" available here at cdbaby. | | Corey Andrew We're All Stars CD (2003)
In Vain music CDs
$13.15 The album's anonymous cover art and title suggest a much less interesting and more mainstream release than Corey Andrew's debut release actually delivers. Andrew has an expressive, soulful voice that easily shifts from the singer/songwriter vibe of the poppy "Next to You" to the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips-style dream pop psychedelia that colors a number of the album's strongest songs. Like Stew, the L.A. based singer/songwriter who also records with his bands the Negro Problem and the Lullabies, Andrew acknowledges the R&B tradition but refuses to be pigeonholed by it; a song like the gorgeous, expansive title track owes at least as much to the Cocteau Twins as it does to Donny Hathaway. With slightly stronger songwriting and a bigger recording budget -- over the course of 46 minutes, some of the songs start to blend together more than they should -- Corey Andrew could be a formidable talent, and his debut album hints at better things to come. ~ Stewart Mason
Corey Andrew refuses to be "assigned" to the categories of Hip-Hop and R&B simply because of the color of his skin. In the tradition of eclectic black artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Seal, Corey continues to break down the stereotypes in contemporary popular music. Corey's vast musical influences include the legendaryCat Stevens,Velvet Underground, and Pink Floyd.Determined to delve into new musical directions, Corey is an artist more likely to be found setting trends rather than following them.
