Singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux's soulful voice is occupied so palpably by the spirit of Billie Holiday that it's almost scary. Peyroux is certainly influenced by the song and voice of Bessie Smith as well, but she approaches the material on her major-label debut from an entirely ...

In the decade following his departure from The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the death of his younger brother Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan quietly carved out a critically acclaimed solo career steeped in a fusion of soul and blues. Despite parting ways with Nile Rodgers, (who produced Vaughan's first two records), the laid-back Texan goes ...

| | Blue Sparks CD (2004)
Make Way For Sharon Rae CD music
$7.99 Blue sparks often bring a wide range of comparison:blondie to siouxie and the banshees, Roxy music to the clash, the Pixies to Television, Talking heads to the Carter Family. Girl group harmonies, manic guitars, angular soul filled bass and kinetic drumming define their unique sound. They have been discribed repeatedly as one of the best unsigned bands in NYC in countless online & trade publications. with nothing more than word of mouth, their strong live show kept them booked for the past three years in every major underground NY rock club. They have shared the stage with the Star Spangles, Ambulance LTD, the witnesses, The Fever, the Warlocks, The realistics, the View. Kerry Kennedy- guitar/vocalsPhil Aceto-guitar/vocalsAlana Amram-bass/vocalsKen Larkin-drumsNewspaper Taxi says:Blue Sparks are probably NYC's most exciting band right now, currently sending shock waves through the city's music scene and earning the respect of both their peers and music fans alike. The kicker is that they have yet to sign with a label, but this will change soon enough. Their live performances are exciting and dramatic, and their songwriting is rock n' roll at its best: loud, emotional, and intelligent. Blue Sparks are igniting NYC ablaze with rock, and the fire cannot be contained! Living in NYC, it's difficult these days to take someone seriously when they tell you,"You've got to check out this band, they're going to be huge," given the seemingly endless line-up of hyped "next-greatest-thing" bands that permeate my fair city's music scene. Shame on me for thinking that he was perpetrating mere NYC rock-scene chatter because the band in question was Blue Sparks, a Brooklyn based outfit, consisting of Phil Aceto, guitar and lead vocals, Kerry Kennedy, guitar and vocals, Alana Amram bass and vocals, Donnie Myers, drums. They instantly won me over after hearing only half-a-tune when they opened up for The Vue in July at Sin-e, a cozy little rock club in the Lower East Side of NYC. First off, let's make one thing clear: Blue Sparks are a rock n' roll band. Let me repeat that: they are a Rock-And-Goddamn-Take-It-Or-Leave-It- Roll band, the likes of which New York City, and maybe even the western world, hasn't seen for a long, long time (dare I say since..... The Clash? Oooo music fans, bear with me, you haven't seen these guys live yet!). In the same sense that critics and fans used to claim that, in their day, The Clash was the "only band that mattered," I'd submit that Blue Sparks are one of the only bands that matter in NYC right now: they are one of the only bands in NYC that can really rock. These guys play their asses off, have a good time doing it, and look great, all at the same time. When they play a gig, you can feel the energy even from the outside of the club, on the curb, and by the time you've muscled your way toward the stage (every show ...

| | Yogi Half-Pint Demigod CD (2005)
Make Way For Sharon Rae songs
$10.15 half-pint demigod is a collaboration between two musicians who have never worked together. Performed by musicians who didn't hear any of the material until months after they recorded their parts. Produced by a guitarist who didn't play a single note on the album, and didn't have anything to do with recording the material. And written by a songwriter who didn't hear any of the material until the album was already done.In this corner: Shawn "Yogi" Farley, a singer/songwriter/guitarist who has built a rabid cult following by defiantly releasing albums of melodic-yet-intricate hard rock songs. Yogi's music is made up of equal parts pop-song brain and hard-rock brawn, flaunting instrumental virtuosity, catchy vocal melodies, and elaborate live band arrangements. His debut album Any Raw Flesh? was a surprise breakout hit amongst a largely online fanbase; made piecemeal over three years in small independent studios, and released indepedently, it won near-unanimous praise from fans and critics alike " Guitar Player magazine observed that Any Raw Flesh? contained "! a truckload ...
