Slaying the DandiesHailing from the madness that is Los Angeles comes Slaying the Dandies. These guys and gals are the undefeatable persevering x-members of L.A. punk rock band Snap-Her. They've all been playing since they were kids and have the notches in their belts to prove it. Aside from being highly accomplished classical musicians, they have done their time in such bands as Exene's Original Sinners, Mobtown, and the Two Dollar Pistols (played on Indy 103.1's Watusi Rodeo). With strong roots in punk rock, rockabilly, reggae, and ska this band creates music that is interesting even to the educated ear.Being that they are big fans of Sylvia Plath, the name Slaying the Dandies was formulated from a line in one of Plath's poems that literally means to impress people. These guys are also all members of the Chapel Hill based ska/rock band Regatta69 and are not afraid to go on tour and pull off two to four different sets a night just for the thrill of it. It's in this manner that they have created a whirlwind all across the U.S. and Europe, even terrorizing the more obscure places like Slovenia and the Czech Republic.Slaying the Dandies' debut album, The Wait's Begun Again, allows us to hear how they creatively intertwine many different genres of music while holding tight to their own specific "sound". They are one hard-working band that remains focused on their goals without losing sight of their fun and energetic attitude. Wait's Begun Again album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and ...

Wait's Begun Again CD music
$15.19 Keeping with the tradition of smart, poppy alternative, West Hartford, Conneticut's Great Dane spin simplistic, inspirational and oddly graceful tunes. Their debut full-length, One-Leaf Tree, is the sort of quietly revelatory music that sparks nothing but soft sighs of content. Peaceful and absorbing, the disc pays homage to a medley of adult-contemporary rockers, almost an A-list homage to the best thinking man's artists of the last decade or two. Comprised of stringed-instrumental wizard Ben and percussionist/vocalist Dre, the two channel such greats as the Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, and maybe a tad of Oasis. However, if one was forced to pick an act that sounds closest to the post rock of Great Dane, my vote would go to the Jimmy Chamberlain solo group. The former Smashing Pumpkin skinsman's delicate, lush, and intelligent rock has obviously played a vast role on the two, who seem to have a natural knack for making catchy songs that rarely cross into mopey, teen-age cheese. Thank God for that! Opener "26 Seconds" is the perfect example of Chamberlain's deft touch on the band's palette. Mixing earlier Foo Fighters with the aforementioned Pumpkinhead, the song adds a few odd twists like a banjo-twanging passage here or there. "Good (who) RE:" is layered shoe-gazer rock with a bit of 90's radio rock to it; I dare you to listen to this and not start humming. "What's to Come" is a short, smooth interlude of relaxed bass lines and a sweet guitar melody. "Bus Stop" is one of Tree's strongest cuts and sounds like Radiohead broadcast through an alternate universe. The quirky "Fact" cross-pollinates spacey brit-pop sensibility with soaring alt-rock. "Fiction" follows it up with smart, catchy soft rock wrapped into a slowly budding ballad. "A Perfect Smile" is (in my humble opinion) the best song on the disc; starting with clean strums it builds into jumpy, breezy and confident rock. A weird passage or two adds a vaguely Latin beat to the proceedings, and the song comes across ...

| | Steven Santoro Where I Come From CD (2007)
Wait's Begun Again CD music
$16.45 Steven Santoro, born Steven Kowalczyk, from Massachusetts, did not have to look far to find his new name. His grandfather, Libertore Santoro was a saxophone player and inspired Steven, the fourth grader, to play the horn as well. But during his freshman year in High School , Steven's musical interests took a turn. Even though he loved playing classic Big Band charts like Count Basie’s “Queen Bee”, he truly found himself while sitting in front of a piano writing songs. Soon his band director was lending him the keys to the Grand piano in the auditorium. Steven's songwriting and singing addiction eventually led him to the University of Massachusetts to study Afro American Music and Jazz with Dr. Horace Boyer. While learning to sing and improvise on classic 32 bar songs made famous in the Jazz and Swing eras, Steven wrote and arranged his own pieces. Some were inspired by the form and tone of the classics and others continued on the ever changing path of the pop music that pervaded. Steven's ability to authentically juggle the two styles is what years later, caught the ears of Ahmet Ertegun, the legendary founder of Atlantic Records. After a stint of teaching Special Education classes in Los Angeles, Steven recorded his first album, “Moods And Grooves”, for Atlantic Records with producers Ertegun and Shane Keister. Released worldwide, it rose to #20 on the Jazz Radio Charts in the USA while Kowalczyk toured the country as an opener for FOURPLAY ( Bob James, Nathan East, Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason). After parting with Atlantic Records, Steven played to eager audiences in London and “Moods And Grooves” shot to #1 on United Kingdom's Jazz FM Radio. Back home, Steven performed in New York's club scene and worked as a studio session singer, lending his voice to many national and international ad campaigns. He also produced and arranged for other independent recording artists and kept on writing the songs he loved to write. At the same time he was able to take part in his other love, teaching. The Public School Repertory Company, a performing arts alternative High School located in the heart of Times Square, tapped into the talented, now more experienced Steven Kowalczyk. For three years he taught Songwriting, Music Theory and Vocal Technique to a creative and restless crew of NYC's Hip Hop culture. Under his guidance, his Songwriting class won the award for ...
