Tokyo based and New York born trumpet artist Rick Overton is a unique voice in music today. Having been called an "outstanding artist" (Paul Bayliss, International Herald Tribune/Asahi News Service), he continues to develop and change not only as a performer but also as a composer and educator as well.Rick attended Berklee College of Music (1981, Professional Music) and Shenandoah Conservatory (1984, BM Jazz Studies, cum laude, BM Education, cum laude) in the 80's. He started a long association in the 80's with one of music's living legends, Teo Macero, who sculpted many of the ideas about music that Rick still has to this day. He has performed with the SS Dolphin Cruise Line, Kings Productions, The Temptations, Seleno Clarke, Branford Marsalis, Craig Boyd, The Empire Brass Quintet, Cyrus Chestnut, Mark Whitfield, Donald Harrison, Tommy Campbell, Nat Reeves, Hunky Page, Mark Marino and a host of others. As an educator, Rick has taught form kindergarten to graduate students on two continents and has been an educational consultant on a third with bass instructor Taimei Matusmoto at the National College of Music in Ecuador. He has taught public schools in Virginia, New York and Florida as well as Japan. Rick also created the instrumental music program at Nishimachi International School in Tokyo. He is currently an Associate Professor of Jazz Improvisation and Trumpet at Tokyo College of Music in Japan. Rick created the nation's first open course in jazz improvisation at a four year university with 40-60 students per year enrolled. As a lecturer, he has presented at the National Association of Music High School in Japan and regularly at Ai Music Foundation for music teachers. He also gives lectures to music education students at Tokyo College of Music. He is heralded and sought out by other trumpet players as a trouble shooter and rehabilitation specialist. As a composer(MA Music, Composition), Rick has written in both jazz and classical music genres. His two solo CDs, "Tokyo Time Zone" (1995) and "Urbanesque" (2001) featured all original compositions. Anthony Plog, trumpet professor at Freiburg Music College on "Tokyo Time Zone" said, "I thoroughly enjoy it and play it all the time for my students and my own pleasure. It is extremely musical." Derek Sivers of CDBaby.com on "Urbanesque" commented, "This is one of the best CDs I've ever heard and I've listened to over 60,000 of them!" and Paul Bayliss of the International Herald Tribune/Asahi News Service said, "(It) may be one of the most original and inspired jazz albums in recent years." Tokyo Time Zone album
$14.54 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee ...

Tokyo Time Zone CD music
$9.99 ELLA FITZGERALD WISHES YOU A SWINGING CHRISTMAS is a charming, warmly humorous--and yes, swinging--set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves. And so Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" is wistfully romantic and Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Let It Snow" is kittenishly enticing. As always, Norman Granz's production avoids the schlock that drowns some holiday sets. This is as good as jazz Christmas albums get.
This is a delightful Christmas jazz reissue featuring ...

| | South City Voices Got Swing! CD (2003)
Tokyo Time Zone CD music
$17.05 It was right about the turn of the century that South City Voices really broke onto the Atlanta music scene. A couple years earlier Don Discenza, director of music at his church, recruited Derk Simonson, Jennifer Ferren, and Jan Barlow from his choir and activated a lifelong dream to sing bass, write music, and arrange songs for a professional level jazz vocal group. Jennifer was, and is, a pop singer and songwriter with her own popular rock band. Derk was, and is, a big band singer. The "Creative Life Singers", as the group was called then, began performing some of Don's original spiritual compositions with his "hip" arrangements. When Jan left the group, Don contacted Rebecca Windham, an Atlanta jazz singer and piano/vocal teacher who also coaches vocal groups. This addition was responsible for a new level of performance. Shortly thereafter, Becky invited Susan Taylor, a long time Atlanta favorite, singing with her band, and the group launched into 5 part harmonies. Appearances at local jazz venues were added with a rhythm section, a horn or 2, and a new name, "Outside the Vox".And then we met Mac. Actually, Cecil Welch, an Atlanta trumpet legend introduced us to Mac Frampton, a nationally known concert pianist, arranger, and conductor. We began touring with the "Hollywood Hills Orchestra", everywhere from Parkersburg to Pasadena, and we had another name - "The Starlight Singers". In the summer of 2002, Heather Jones, an ensemble singer and soloist with The Michael O'Neal Chamber Choir, replaced Jennifer and Susan, who left to concentrate on their own growing careers as soloists with their own bands. Work began that Fall on promotional material for the new group, permanently renamed South City Voices, and, finally, our first CD. "Got Swing!" was completed in October, 2003 featuring new arrangements of old standards by Becky and Don.This exceptional vocal quartet is now delighting concert audiences as they swing through jazz arrangements of popular songs written in the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Rebecca, artistic director for ...
