| | Jill Jack Live From Billy's Basement CD (2000)
In Vain songs
$12.69 Her name is Jill Jack. Yes, it's her real name. This singer/songwriter from Michigan is as real as anyone can be. With a voice that can go from plaintive country croon to husky rock'n'roll growl, emotionally honest songs and her own brand of friendly sexiness, Jill takes the best of American music and stirs it into a very special melting pot. Her debut album, Watch Over Me, was released in April of 1997. Since '97, she's been a staple in the 'win' column of the Detroit Music Awards, survivor of a relentless performing schedule in and out of Michigan, amassed a body of press clippings most 'major label' acts would envy, and sold over 10,000 cds, all the while building a madly loyal audience - and remaining a totally involved parent. "The [music] business is luck and work and talent, and I don't believe I got this far on luck. I know how hard I've worked, how hard I work every show. Sometimes I wake up the day after and wonder where the energy is going to come from, to get up and make coffee and clean the house - and yet there's such a good feeling that comes from giving it all up on stage to the audience, it somehow inspires me to do it all over again."It is Jill's connection to the everyday that suffuses her writing and keeps the lifeline to her audience strong and vital. "The fans I draw are the average American," Jill observes. "They're all ages, from all walks of life and backgrounds." She tells, with equal parts wry affection and humorous awe, of going into a rock club for ...
| | Jimmy Sparks & The Mist CD (2003)
In Vain album
$9.49 Also See "Jimmy Sparks & The Blizzard"COMING LATE 2008 - "Tales From The Beach""The Mist" studio project is a soul-searching journey utilizing a variety of progressive rock methods. There are certainly hints of Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Radiohead, Pete Townshend and Brian Wilson involved here. The songs are brought together to tell a story about one man's search for himself.-Jimmy Sparks"Fans of early Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues are sure to enjoy this haunting melodic release. Progressive, but not pretentious."-Kerry Tucker (Einstein's Sister)"Reviewing a CD from an artist you don't know is like going on a blind date. You don't want to make any quick decisions - speed dating aside - but you know the first words out of the person's mouth will be very telling. After dropping in the CD from Jimmy Sparks, I sat back and waited while an ominous-sounding bass grew from the speakers around me. It was a little disconcerting, but I held on and was rewarded by ominous-sounding lyrics and vocals. I liked it in the same way I like truly dramatic horror movies. Not that Sparks' work was frightening, but it was deep and darkly compelling. I wouldn't recommend it to friends who are just embarking on a Prozac regime or someone who tends to despair. The songs lead to contemplation, but not exactlymeditation. Some of the songs seemed to be at war with themselves - lyrics at odds with the music that separated the verses and was almost manic in comparison to Sparks'smooth vocals. The song "Bed" is particularly disjointed, with Sparks' beginning softly, then bringing in guitars and the sound of seagulls, which soon morph into the screeching of a flock of Hitchcock-minded birds. I don't want to run the psychological theme into the ground. But many of thetunes are like sitting in on the soundtrack of someone's therapy session - the highs included with the lows. Still, this CD calls for repeated listening. I'll take the second date, thank you."-Beverly Durfee (The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colorado)"If there was a category for '70s derived prog rock this album would fit it quite neatly... Lyrically it presents a journey from darkness to light and there are thought provoking moments all along the way. For me the stronger tracks include "Mist In The Trees" and "My Faith Is Strong". "-Terry Bateman (Cross Rhythms - UK)"I hate to pigeon hole Jim Sparks' music, but I would have to say that musically it has the definite flavor of Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, and even a little Beach Boys. Yet, Jim's music is entirely his ...

| | Dan Strauss Rocking Chair CD (2005)
In Vain CD music
$13.89 Songs tell stories. Songs paint pictures. For as long as he can remember, Dan Strauss has been filled with, and guided by, songs. On his third CD, Rocking Chair, Dan finds his way through life's puzzles with his wistful songwriting, evoking the rich musical styles he grew up on from The Beatles to Elvis Costello, Simon and Garfunkle, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and the Pretenders. The songs are melodic and lyrical, vivid and pure - strengthened by a rich palette of music history and the rhythms of rock and roll, country, folk and jazz. Dan started writing music when he picked up the guitar at age 17 upon realizing that a piano was too heavy to carry around. Original songs started emerging as soon as three chords were learned. Over the years, through much collaboration, a writing style began to evolve. His songs, steeped in melody and lush hooks, pen tales about life and relationships with a Dylan-esque insight, Springsteen sincerity ...
