We recently had the exclusive opportunity to sample 3 songs from the new CD and the guys have definitely found their sound! With the addition of new drummer Mike Partain, the guys, Steve Rogers (lead singer, writer) Mike Beloud (guitar) and Jorge Ramirez (bass) have completed songs that can be described in one word, REAL! From the song 'Maybe Someday', a true Rock n' Praise tune, to the Acoustic heartfelt song 'Half Way', the guys have definitely been touched by the Holy Spirit in creating music that will be loved by teens as well as adults. RISE has also added a new level to Christian music with a song called 'Cancers Creation. ' We have never heard a song like this in Christian or secular music. Steve Rogers bravely opens his soul and writes about his experience with cancer and the guys presentation of this song will have you by your heart strings. My name is John E. Payne, and I and my helpers are making a new kind of music along the lines of the kind of music that I've always enjoyed. Anyone who likes Pink Floyd and Neil Young AND Jim Croce, will probably enjoy my "Movie music for the mind".Some Notes:First of all, let me say, "Thanks", for checking out my music. It's not all just me. Support, encouragement, and ideas have been given to me for years by my wife, Carel, by my friends, and my family. They have taught me that the absolute best thing in the world is love. All kinds of love. This doesn't mean to say that all my songs are love songs. I wanted to write about all kinds of things. Like when we can eliminate war (and not people), or when humanity starts moving out to space. My main instrument is acoustic guitar, so most of the songs have 6 and/or 12 string acoustic & electric guitars on them. I also enjoy deep bass, so I modified an old electric bass to play quite a bit lower. All the parts are played live to my recording equipment. There are no electronic or mechanical rhythm tracks. I do use some synthesizers, but they are also played live. The natural sounds you will hear on some of the albums are actual, on-the-spot recordings of beautiful surroundings. Performance-wise, I also want you to know that each part I keep to make the final mix of a song is from the times I played when I felt best. Those good feelings sustain me during the engineering, mixing, and production of the albums. Not all the songs are happy, (some are rather dark) but I felt really good while playing, and I think that comes through. Just like when a guy telling a story gets to enjoy the story too. "What We Really Need" is the first recording by the racially eclectic Heart of the City Worship Band. The songs on this project are not your typical "Praise and Worship" fare. The CD starts with a bang with the rockin' "We Believe You" and jumps right into the rock gospel song "Rise Up" featuring the hot HOTC horn section. From there the album takes you through through Caribbean flavored songs "We Celebrate the Love of God", and the popular song "IT IS GOOD"-again accented by Heart of the City's great brass section and big vocal sound. "We Will Not Offer You" is a combination of Reggae and swing that is reminiscent of the music of "Sting". Then the album shifts gear into the "in your face" lyrics and stark alternative production of "What We Really Need". The next song is funky gospel song that's a prayer entitled "Let Your Love Flow". The eight cut, "I Will Sing Unto the Lamb" is a mixture of a "Negro spiritual" feel with a Messianic praise style. "We Choose to Bow" is guitar driven minor ballad (that has also been arranged by Allegis music and recorded by Azusa Pacific Choir in a orchestra "Quo Vadis" type feel"). This song could be described as a song of militant submission. "Open the Eyes of Our Hearts" (no, not the Paul Baloche song) is a powerful, slow gospel song that's a prayer taken from the book of Ephesians. "We Love You, Lord" is a pop ballad featuring African American, Nancy Ellis who, on this song, has a sort of Diana Ross sound to her voice. The 12th cut, "Right Here, Right Now" features Sandy ...
