As a child, I would have my parents leave a light on in the hallway during bedtime. It had "magical" powers that would chase away the "monsters" at night and make me feel secure. As an adult I found that the moon (by brightening up the sky) would have the same effect as the nitelite during my childhood. It's silvery touch would always make me feel secure while I slept. This feeling inspired the work called NiteLite: Brittany's Song for my daughter, Brittany. She is a gift I cherish and when she was born I wanted her to have her own nitelite that would guide her though life's journey. This recording of piano music was made to be our nitelite and yours. Carl has studied music formally for over 25 years. His training in the classics led him to a full University scholarship in piano performance when he was 16 years old. He studied with Steinway masters and was a student of piano at the Conservatory of Wiesbaden. He performed professionally as a pianist and entertainer in dinner theaters for ten years. Carl Has a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Denver and is licensed as a psychologist. He also has a Masters in education from the University of Colorado. He holds a black belt in Judo and loves to jog. He has run the Pikes Peak Ascent Race and ran his first marathon in New York in November 1996. Nitelite: Brittanys Song music CDs
$13.85 A nice idea -- although a better, more eclectic tribute can be found on Rhino's Bo Diddley Beats compilation, released a decade earlier. Hey Bo Diddley: A Tribute! follows in the celebrated '90s tradition of corralling established blues and rock talents and letting them pay homage to their heroes in the studio, often with the help of a common backing band. Unfortunately, Hey Bo Diddley suffers from a serious case of "karaoke syndrome" -- as good as Otis Rush, Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite, and the rest of the gang are, they're seldom able to glue together convincing grooves from the ho-hum, pre-recorded backing tracks. Instead of frantic, muscular Bo Diddley beats to work with, they're provided a tinny, by-the-numbers Bo Diddley pitter-patter. Producer Carla Olson had good intentions, but the results are a mixed bag. With the exception of Corey Harris' slinky reworking of "Crackin' Up," none of the tunes on this album would make the cut for a solo album by any of these artists. Perhaps the real tribute to Diddley is the proof provided by this album that his sound is much harder to master than people would like to think. ~ Ken Chang
Aside from Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley is one of rock's only architects who can claim a style of his own and also have it automatically identified with his own name, a virtual musical trademark. The jumping, syncopated rhythm that he came up with at the dawn of the 1950s is still a large part of what rock & roll is all about, and makes Diddley, in his own way, easily as revolutionary as Berry or Jimi Hendrix. That being said, it's almost bizarre that a tribute album hadn't already been arranged before this one. Though Quicksilver Messenger Service's Happy Trails is all but a Bo Diddley tribute, that was one group synthesizing his material through a brilliant psychedelic gauze. Now, finally, in 2002 ex-Textones founder Carla Olson has produced and put this authentic tribute album together, and it's a righteous beauty. Olson, a fine solo artist in her own right, assembles a unique congregation of new and veteran musicians here who not only do Diddley's music justice, but also show that the musician/songwriter was not limited to his patented, celebrated style. A good example of this would be Corey Harris' swampy take on "Crackin' Up," which slithers like a rattlesnake on a desert floor. As well, Kris Wiley's reading of "You Don't Love Me" combines blues with rockabilly and is buttressed by a brilliant shuffle rhythm. Diddley's more recognizable rhythm and feel is captured in dazzling style by such masters as Taj Mahal (on "Bo Diddley") and Charlie Musslewhite's beautifully dusty ...

$16.45 LINDA GILBERTSONWith Karen Carpenter as her original adult role model, Lindabegan writing songs, and not surprisingly, love ballads became thegenesis of her huge writing talent. The true beginnings of her current abilities took place in a smalltown in Minnesota, where as a young girl, she was given pianolessons. Although she took to the instrument immediately, she didnot always follow her instructor’s guidelines, nor set down in the music books. Linda was not a rebel in the truest sense of the word, but she absolutely knew what she wanted with the music, and it was to be creative beyond what her lessons gave her. After beingsomewhat at odds with her piano teacher about this for a period of four years, she finally quit taking lessons.Fortunately, her mother encouraged her to at leastcontinue practicing while she sought the pleasures she knew werethere in the music. This she did, and while practicing she discoveredthat she could sing as well. Like many others at that time, she became enamored of Lesley Gore, and found great pleasure insimply ‘ singing along’ with her records. Later in her life she would dothe same thing with another fabulous voice, the late Karen Carpenter. In fact, to this day Linda is constantly told that her sound is the sameas Karen’s was. It was undoubtedly her affinity for that sound thatcause her original attempts as a song writer to fall into the samecategory of music…ballads. One ...
