Pangolin Band TRB CD

Pangolin Band's music is equal parts rawness and lushness, like a panorama of Australian summer sky seen through a bug-spattered windscreen, on the rushing indolence of a car trip to the beaches. "Serenity" is a word not often associated with Rock, but there is a serenity to the music of Pangolin Band as they swing from delicate to thunderous like the Smashing Pumpkins' good twin. Pangolin Band have the lustre and spaciousness of the Cocteau Twins and The Church, but with the rock and roll thud and jazzy clatter of the great power trios- Cream, Led Zeppelin and The Hendrix Experience. Overlying this is the influence of global grooves from bossa-nova to Afro-pop, and underlying it, and showing through in the sideslipping chord progressions, is a hint of the addictive sourness of Flamenco and Eastern European music. Throw in the iridescent chord voicings of Allan Holdsworth and Bill Connors, and a bit of distant Shoegazer thunder, and you have the complex mix that is Pangolin Band.Like the landscapes and sensations of the Australian summer that they evoke, Pangolin Band have a huge energy that can become trancelike. "Treeline" pays tribute to this sensation:"We hit the road, there's a smear of cloud, comatose, over light filled spaces, the dashboard glows."Melbourne outfit Pangolin Band were formed in 2002 to play impressionistic music with a hard rock edge. They have recently released their debut album. It is characterised by a commitment to musical interaction, with a strong element of improvisation that has become unfashionable in rock. Basic tracks were mostly cut in one take, without click tracks and with minimal editing.
