Menil album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual actors, but it's hard not to sing along with a song like "Jump," where the cast replaces Eddie Van Halen's keyboard riff with bright choral harmonies. ~ Andrew Leahey
The second Glee soundtrack feels a bit rushed, arriving no less than four weeks after Vol. 1's release and featuring songs from half as many episodes. Returning fans will still find a lot to enjoy here, though, as Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) gets her first solo and supporting characters Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Kevin McHale (Artie) enjoy a healthier chunk of airtime. Nevertheless, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, with Morrison delivering one of the album's most inventive songs -- a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl" ...
| | Jersey Boys CD (2005) Original Broadway Cast
Menil CD music
$10.39 Broadway musical JERSEY BOYS brings to the stage the story of 1960s singing sensations Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, recounting their rise from working-class kids to pop-music superstars. The soundtrack, naturally, is filled with Four Seasons hits, including timeless classics like "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," and "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)." Interspersed between the songs are snippets of dialogue from the play, and the actors playing the Four Seasons nail the group's famous vocal harmonies impressively. JERSEY BOYS is a fun listen for those looking to take a walk down memory lane for historical curiosity or even just nostalgia's sake.

| | Kings Of Leon Only By The Night CD (2008)
Menil music CDs
$8.99 With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern ...
| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Menil songs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on ...
| | Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton CD (1966) Gold
Menil album
$19.35 John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers: John Mayall (vocals, piano, organ, harmonica); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass); Hughie Flint (drums).
Includes original release liner notes by Neil Slaven & reissue liner notes by Paul Trynka.
1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't until this recording that he'd had the opportunity to truly stretch out in the studio and ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Menil CD music
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.
Audio Remasterer: Doug Sax.
Arranger: Claus Ogerman.
Personnel: Joel Pargman, Eun Mee Ahn, David Ewart, Amy Wickman, Gil Romero, Katia Popov, Tammy Hatwan, Razdan Kutumjain, Alan Grunfeld, Helen Nightengale, Barbara Porter, ...

| | Queen Godis Power U! CD (2006)
Menil album
$12.65 THANK U FOR SUPPORTING THE POWER OF THIS PROJECT!!!!!!!QUEEN GODIS - (pron: kwen-god-iz)ABOUT THE ARTIST:Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Queen God-Is one of the most gifted, lyrically insightful, thought provoking, and dynamic spoken word artists of our time. Her gifts however, extend way beyond the realm of poetry. Her debut album, Power U! , highlights Queen as co-producer, budding engineer, MC, and singer who hooks up both lead and background vocals with her awe-inspiring sense of melody and harmony. Her work incorporates Hip Hop, soul, rock and even some theater- bringing forth a powerfully unique energy that wows crowds of every demographic. An entertainer, seeker and conveyor of truth, her socially conscientious yet accessible lyrics (from the hood to the burbs, projects to penthouse) invoke chills and undeniably leave you changed. Touching an array of audiences, GodIs showcases at venues that range from public schools and cozy cafes, to huge concert and university lecture halls both nationally and abroad. She has and continues to grace the stage with some of the top artists of our lifetime. Even more significantly, she dedicates a great portion of her time empowering youth all over the world with her work.In 2001, Queen was hand selected to appear as feature performance poet on part of Les Nubians' (Afro-European singing duo) international tour route. Her work also appears on two tracks on the album: Les Nubians Presents Echoes: Chapter One Nubian Voyager - released in the Fall of 2005. Rave reviews inspired the label to re-release this record as a poetry book with CD in the summer of 2006. (Check out http://www.femmixx.com/queengodisinterview.html or www.myspace.com/queengodisbiz for more on Queen GodIs)ABOUT THE ALBUM: (FULL LENGTH ALBUM PLUS MINI-CHAPBOOK WITH ARTWORK...WELL WORTH YOUR HARD..OR EASILY EARNED MONEY...)Perhaps womanHood is as a landscape. If so, the album Power U! is a wonderful journey through its diverse "terrains." Queen delivers raw imagery that brings to light fresh revelations about society and its relationship to the female body. Witty and intelligent, yet boldly honest, her mission is to use the “beautiful struggle” of womanhood to help us reexamine how we view ourselves, our communities and our relationships. In her own words: “Power U!” is a multi-medium journey through the sacred feminine (mountains, peaks and valleys - complete with flood and drought). It is a never-ending poem and an open love letter to self. It is bold, beautiful and honest! Each track started out as a poetic statement connected by theme and vision. Later, through a series of lessons and experiences communicated ...
