BuddhaBell (tm) is a tool for meditators. It contains 3 tracks of silent meditation, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 mintues long. Each track starts with 10 seconds of silence to allow you to get settled into a comfortable position. Then there is a single bell sound. These days, many of the instrumentalists who end up in the new age bins aren't necessarily into the new age culture. They don't meditate, they don't own any crystals, and they never use words like "transcendental" or "healing." Some, in fact, might think of themselves as ambient or world music instead of new age, but because they provide instrumental music that is tranquil and peaceful, they are marketed as new age artists. Emily Simko, meanwhile, is about as stereotypical a new age artist as you will find. Excursions for a People of Dreams is a stereotypically new age title, and the liner notes are full of terms like "perfect centeredness," "interconnectedness," and "galactic intelligence." Those who appreciate new age culture will probably find Simko's liner notes fascinating; those who don't will find them either amusing or pretentious (or perhaps both). Simko (who plays all of the synthesizers herself) isn't the least bit apologetic about what she does, and the fact that this CD is so stereotypical will no doubt make it a hot item among new age's hardcore. People who tend to dislike stereotypical new age are advised to look elsewhere, while those who have at least a casual interest in this type of electronic music should be able to find some things to admire about Simko's compositions -- some of which have a floating quality, and some of which have a dramatic, ultra-serious quality that makes you think of the background music in artsy European films like The Story of O. Whether you love new age, hate it, or can take it or leave it, Excursions deserves credit for being so uncompromising. ~ Alex Henderson
