$11.15 BLUES PRIEST John R Finch is not only a singer song writer, he really is a very cool Roman Catholic priest based at Sacred Heart Church, Leigh, Lancashire, England. Father John is also an ordinary guy with a special gift for making songs that don't push religion, but are in touch with ordinary people's spirituality. This man is intellect with raw emotion that's in touch with common humanity. Father John was born in Wigan. He has has been playing guitar since the age of 12. His musical influences are Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. John started writing songs as a way of communicating his very personal spirituality and compassion for people. Never preaching, but songs with a message-that's his recipe for success and perhaps why his music appeals to people of all ages, young and old. John says: "The songs reflect in different ways sparks of my life and love, spirituality and passion and open-ended philosophy. It is our music, and I call it "funkabilly". John's ideas are influenced by mysticism and he says: "The name FĂĽnklein is borrowed from Meister Eckhart, a 13th century Rhineland mystic, who uses the term: SeelenfĂĽnklein ("spark of the soul"). At one level, FĂĽnklein (from funk, connoting an emission of sparks or rays of light) identifies that part of the soul in which mystical apprehension, or union with God, occurs. On a personal level, it reflects my Polish roots on my father's side of the family (our family name was changed from "Funk" to "Finch" when I was 13).Listen to these songs with your heart and you will be touched in some special way by something personal for you. This is music of the heart and soul.John says:The first song, "Elected Silence" is inspired by a poemof the same name by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Hopkins wasa brilliant poet and this doesn't do his workjustice-I hope he doesn't mind me borrowing a linefrom his poem-by the way, there is also a lineborrowed from the "Desiderata"- listen for: " Goquietly amid the noise and haste...""Midnight Tears" seems almost like a tribute to HankWilliams or Roy Orbison but really it is based on John'sreading of an 18thcentury Polish love poem that he found in one of hisDad's poetry books! It will have you crying in yourbeer, or vodka, as the case may be!"Daffodil Island" was inspired by a real place: HopeIslandroundabout in ...

Stop Smoking album
$16.45 The Crescent City’s Happy Talk Band formed in 2000 and then reformed in Post-Katrina New Orleans in 2005. The new incarnation consists of Bailey Smith and Alex McMurray on guitars, Steve Calandra on bass, Mike Andrepont on drums, Mitch Palmer on lapsteel and banjo, and song writer Luke Allen singing and playing a twenty-five dollar nylon string acoustic guitar. Allen’s songs are a series of eulogies and apologies set to the uncompromising rhythm of a drunken Decatur Street crawl. “There there” (2007) is Happy Talk Band’s second release and Gallatin Street Files and Archaic Media’s (GFAM) first. “Total Death Benefit” (2004) will be re-released by GFAM in 2008.from Gambit Weekly 10/02/07Mourning Glory By Alison Fensterstock The Happy Talk Band's There, There is stuck between rock and a hard place. When Luke Allen came by to drop off a copy of There, There, his second CD with his longtime project the Happy Talk Band, he popped open the jewel case to read off a curious annotation of the dedications in the liner notes: 'Suicide, suicide, O.D. — which is basically suicide — O.D., murder, murder, suicide." It's not that Allen is necessarily a morbid guy " Happy Talk's 2003 album, Total Death Benefit, a unique alternative folk-rock collection of bitter love songs and boozy, self-conscious ballads, cemented him as a keen chronicler of downtown New Orleans bohemia. He's spent a good bit of the four years since as a bartender, serving drinks to the people he writes about on There, There. The thing that stands out the most on the album is the collection of memorial songs. 'Pete, Kelly, Bucky, Yvette down the street " Allen counts off. 'There's a little bit of everybody on there." Although Allen seems to be a speedy eulogist, he says the process isn't directly contingent on bad news. 'Sometimes I get a line here or there, and I write the song in pieces. And then the latest tragedy comes around, and I realize I've been writing about it all along." There, There ...
