| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
4-Play CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with ...

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
4-Play songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, ...

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
4-Play CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening ...

| | Luke Carter Heather CD
4-Play CD music
$10.15 In a time of multiple choices when it comes to singer-songwriters and guitar-based vocal artists, one could wonder just how anyone could stand out in the sea of many. To use the conventional promotional plans is to place your talents and gifts at the mercy of a fickled public and their ever changing ideas of what's in and what's not. But if you're Luke Carter of Georgia and you've traveled this musical road since the age of 14, publishing your first EP (Heather) at 15, now, at age of 30, you might need more than the world's comparisons to other artist as a promotional tool. You know the bios that ...

| | Janice Borla From Every Angle CD (2006)
4-Play CD music
$13.15 Janice Borla's second Blujazz CD continues the adventurous, risk-taking approach of her first disc for the label. With a fine supporting cast of musicians on hand, including trumpeter/flügelhornist Art Davis, guitarist John McLean, pianist Dan Haerle, bassist Bob Bowman, and drummer Jack Mouse, she immediately signals her intent with an innovative treatment of "Alone Together" that also features some fine scatting, though the excessive overdubbed backing vocals in its finale are a bit much. How many singers attempt to perform Charlie Parker's "Segment"? Her scat vocal in a brisk setting is right on the money with the instrumentalists. She's just as comfortable scatting modern works like John Scofield's funky "I'll Take Les" or Kenny Wheeler's demanding ballad "Gentle Piece," which showcases Davis' mellow flügelhorn. Her composition "Askew in the Cradle" is no less demanding and this wild blues, which evolved from a practice routine, is also an impressive performance. Janice Borla clearly deserves far wider recognition with this release. ~ Ken Dryden
Janice Borla has made utilizing her voice as a jazz instrument her artistic mission, applying it to her explorations of instrumental jazz tunes by modern and contemporary jazz ...
