| | Jennifer Lee Jaywalkin' CD (2003)
Gimme Five
$18.99 A warm, cool-toned, and subtle singer based in San Francisco, Jennifer Lee makes her debut as a leader with J-Walkin'. Her versions of standards are often unusual and full of surprises; Lee and guitarist Peter Sprague are responsible for the arrangements. On "Blue Skies" she sings way behind the beat, "Night and Day" is given a light Latin rhythm, "I'm Old Fashioned" is taken quite slow, and on "Inchworm," she adds an oddly charming talking section in which she philosophizes a bit. The other standards include a very effective "Baltimore Oriole" (which features tenor saxophonist Tripp Sprague), "Chega de Saudade," and a lighthearted and swinging "Please Don't Talk About Me When You're Gone." There are also a few originals ("Note to My Niece" is touching), a wordless vocal on Debussy's "Claire de Lune," and a closing unaccompanied piano solo by Lee that is a tribute to a friend. In addition to the brothers Sprague, Lee is supported by bassist Bob Magnusson, drummer Javon Lewis, percussionist Tommy Aros, and occasionally Rich Kubus on accordion. Throughout the set, it is obvious that a lot of care went into the music and that each song means something to Lee. Listeners who enjoy jazz-inspired vocalists who are superior interpreters of lyrics will find that J-Walkin' means something to them too. ~ Scott Yanow
Rooted in the straight-ahead jazz tradition, this San Francisco Bay Area-based vocalist has developed a style all her own. With her warm, sultry voice, extraordinary musicality and hip sense of time, Jennifer brings each song uniquely to life. On an up-tempo tune, she really swings. ...
| | Johnny Blackthorn Resurrection By Degrees CD (2004)
Gimme Five
$14.19 Hailing from the Mississippi delta, Blackthorn is a strong, intense songwriter and performer with a haunting voice that demands your ear. Johnny first fell in love with music as he experienced the soul Elvis Presley, the lyrics of Bob Dylan and the pure rock-n-roll storytelling of Bruce Springsteen. A self-taught acoustic guitarist, Johnny bought his first guitar, a Yamaha 12-string, at age 16 in Vicksburg, MS and began capturing the pain and confusion of adolescence through music. In search of a career validated by our social system, Johnny received a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss. Through the years of utilizing his degree in the work place, Johnny found himself in Dallas, Texas and could not escape the voice within that told him he was destined for something else. In search of that something, he left his career behind and moved to Richmond, Virginia where he pursued a master's degree in Theology at the Baptist Theological Seminary of Richmond. All the while he was playing, writing, and growing as a musician. Blackthorn had built a repertoire of over forty songs in his pathway to self-discovery and made a decision to at last pursue music. Blackthorn recorded his debut solo acoustic album, I Belong Here, in 1999. The following year was both exciting and challenging. During the birth of his debut CD, Johnny teamed up with talented blues guitarist Brian Fones, an established musician in the Richmond scene. Johnny's infectious lyrics and melodies and Brian's ghostly slide guitar quickly filled the acoustic ...

| | Marta Topferova Homage To Homeland: Czech, Moravian & Slovak Folk Songs CD (2004)
Gimme Five
$14.19 About CD:The idea of doing this recording came to me over time...I was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, but having lived in the US since the 6th grade, I had not sung in my native language in all that time. Instead, I had formed strong relationships with other musics living here and traveling to different places. But my love for the folk music I grew up hearing re-appeared and I decided to do something with it. Our tradition is slowly vanishing as the majority of young people are no longer interested in folk music. The poetry in these songs is beautiful. The themes might be about love, courtship, heartbreak, nature, or wartime and loss...The history of the land and people's lives are preserved in this music.I collected different songs for this album - some were sung to me by my family when I was young, some of them I found on tapes I have at home, and I also composed two peices for it using folkloric texts. In arranging the songs, I decided to use only a capella vocal harmonies, hoping to achieve a pure, transparent and emotional recording. --- Marta TopferovaBioMarta started singing at age eight in her native Prague, Czech Republic with the 'MládĂ' choir. Upon moving to the US in 1987, she continued her vocal and music studies with the Seattle Girls' Choir. At an early age, she sang in many different languages including Latin, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Finnish and Czech, as well as a wide range of works by Brahms, Hayden, Poulanc and Pergolesi to name a few. She toured Germany and Finland participating in choral festivals in 1985, 1986 and 1990. Her first two recordings were a collection of songs inspired by children's poetry from the Terezin concentration camp, and 'A Ceremony of Carols' by Benjamin Brittain, both with the Seattle Girls' ...
