| | Adam Lambert For Your Entertainment CD (2009)
Singing River CD music
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, ...

| | In A Cage CD (2005)
Singing River music CDs
$8.55 In A Cage was conceived as a way to produce music that emulated my favorite '70's albums. Mostly in attitude and the eclectic nature of bands such as City Boy, Queen, 10cc and Brian Protheroe. The "blue-print" would have to be Sheet Music (10cc), Sheer Heart Attack (Queen) or Young Men Gone West (City Boy). While the songs lack the performance and production excellence of these bands, it was the starting point and the "goal" to get as close as possible. This premise mostly succeeded in letting me just "please" myself, as far as arrangements go. I just did whatever I felt that I would like to hear from a band doing these songs. I'm not sure if that makes any sense... but, in the end, the songs have mostly an 80's and 70's type feel, filtered through my love of 60's music (mostly Beach Boys and Beatles here). There is pretty much nothing that has a "modern" feel (mostly intentionally). People that reviewed several of the songs seemed to often name David Bowie and Pink Floyd as influences - which is true, but I hadn't thought of any of these songs in that light! I'd like to think that each song has thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics. In any case, a lot of time was spent on them. In the end result - I'm looking for those few people out there that like variety in their music. I doubt anyone (but me) will like every In A Cage song, but, at the risk of sounding over-confident, it certainly is a niche that no one else is filling (and no one probably wants to!)... So here it is - from quasi-prog/rock through a trip to the renaissance faire, 60's psychodelia to pure power pop and many stops in between... In A Cage (the mid-70's album that was never released until 2004?).The songs:1. FALL ON YOUR KNEES Somewhat of "prog" style arrangement Borrows liberally from City Boy, especially in the "Cigarettes" type solo's Lyrically, it is sort of an "end-of-the-world" scenarioThe arrangement gets sort of thick in the choruses, but I really wanted a very multi-part chorusI also tried for City Boy-esque interplay between the lead vocal and back-up vox through the verses The first minute is more or less a prelude built on a theme from the chorus2. CLOSER TO THE HEART A Floyd-esque ballad? This is a much more laid-back arrangement Lyrics and style is basically a nod to Brian Protheroe A much more guitar oriented tune with a fretless bass adding to the interplay3. SILENT SERENADEVery much 80's style pop/rock, a nod to City Boy in the pre-chorus and the Beach Boys in the chorus The lyrics are heavily influenced by Lol Mason (City Boy)This tune is the only thing not to be re-mixed numerous times - I could never get the original feel again4. MAN OR MACHINE From a S/T concept album I plan on working on in the future This is my try for a Queensryche type of songI originally thought of dropping this song from ...
