| | Steve Trio Schmidt Red & Orange CD Steve Trio Schmidt Discography of CDs
Cincinnati-based jazz pianist Steve Schmidt is well-known regionally and nationally for his work with The Blue Wisp Big Band and for his tenure as house pianist at The Blue Wisp Jazz Club. At that renowned venue his trio has backed such diverse and legendary soloists as Joe Henderson, Eddie Harris, Herb Ellis, Joe Lovano, Mark Murphy, Scott Hamilton and Tal Farlow - to name just a few. Steve was called upon to fill in for an ailing Count Basie as The Count Basie Orchestra came through Cincinnati in 1984 and went on to play other dates with that famous band after Basie’s death. He has recorded with many regional and national artists as well as with the top-selling Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Schmidt’s tastes are wide-ranging, from blues and mainstream jazz to latin music and he brings all of these influences to bear on his acoustic trio CD, “Red And Orange”. Recorded in New York City, it features Drew Gress on bass (a member of The Fred Hersch Trio and Ravi Coltrane’s group, among others) and Jeff Ballard on drums (Chick Corea, The Brad Mehldau Trio and Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band). “Red And Orange” is a well-recorded, balanced mix of originals and freshly arranged standards that is marked by lyricism, spontaneity and groove from this cohesive trio. Includes liner notes by pianist Fred Hersch. | | Kevin Parlor Bassically Speaking CD (2003)
Red & Orange music CDs
$11.15 -Roland Kaschube, Editor, Bass Professor Magazine (Germany) said:"Kevin Parlor dedicates his bass playing on the CD "Bassically Speaking" to a lyrical-melodic style. He doesn't put much importance on overly-flashy riffs, but rather shows how well the bass is suited to playing melodies. Kevin recorded most of the songs on his CD with a Warwick (Rock Bass-Corvette) bass which comes from right here in Germany. With his German bass, Kevin has developed his own tone which sounds beautifully gentle in your ears; especially since Kevin is not trying to imitate some of the bass masters. With that said, Kevin is masterfully continuing the tradition of this style of playing which was pioneered by such bass players as Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. This is the absolute best Smooth Jazz which is well suited for American Jazz radio, but unfortunately played very rarely here in Germany." -Derick Winterberg, Smooth Jazz music critic said: "Appearing on the horizon of the Smooth/Contemporary Jazz bass players' field is newcomer Kevin Parlor. His freshman offering, an album titled 'Bassically Speaking', is an admirable calling card to the listeners of the genre. Kevin obviously knows his way around the strings of his instrument"...But Kevin doesn't stop at Jazz, he's also comfortable with R&B, Funk, Pop, Rock and other styles! BIO: A native of Englewood, New Jersey USA (now living near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Kevin Parlor began playing bass in high school and quickly made a name for himself in bands performing around New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. During his junior year in high school, Kevin joined a group that went on to open for recording artists including musical greats Ashford & Simpson. In his senior year, Kevin moved to Atlanta, GA where he toured with platinum-selling R&B artist William Bell. Before graduating high school, Kevin joined a group which later opened shows for Patrice Rushen, S.O.S. Band, Michael Henderson, Hamilton Bohannon ...
| | Dale Bruning Timeless Music Of Harold Arlen CD (2002)
Red & Orange songs
$18.25 "Give a listen to a relatively new CD concept that Jude Hibler and her Jazz Link Enterprises partner, guitarist Dale Bruning, inaugurated: a concert with words. "The listener will discover, through Jude Hibler's enlightened narratives, poignant anecdotes, and facts about Arlen, the composer, the man and his songs, underscoring his genius as a tunesmith. "You not only get to hear his music and the imaginative arrangements of it by the quartet's leader/guitarist, Dale Bruning, you get to know Arlen. "Weaving the spoken word into the music to give listeners an intimate glimpse of the music maker is a fresh concept that enhances their musical experience. It also adds context and texture to the concert and enhances one's appreciation of world-class musician Dale Bruning and his quartet's superb musicianship in improvising the melodies....Wayne Thompson - Editor, Jazzscene of Oregon From Jazz Journal International magazine by Bruce Crowther:'One of the master craftsmen of jazz guitar and a distinguished teacher -- demonstrates that his gifts are unmarred. This CD, along with their Timeless Music of Harry Warren CD, are very entertaining and musically of the very highest order.'"The narration is informed and succinct and the interpretations superb. No one puts a foot wrong and Arlen's music, a significant part of American popular song, is extremely well served....Bruce Crowther, Spain.
