This is an exciting disc! It contains some of Randall Woolf's most popular works, and it has an impressive list of performers: RANSOM WILSON, TODD REYNOLDS, KATHLEEN SUPOVÉ, RINDE ECKERT and THE PACKRandall Woolf was born in Detroit. He discovered classical music for himself in college, having spent high school in the usual garage-rock bands. He studied composition privately from 1982 to 1987, taking 3 years of counterpoint and harmony lessons in the Schoenberg tradition with noted microtonalist and jazz visionary Joseph Maneri. he studied orchestration and composition privately with David Del Tredici. In a moment of weakness, he entered the Ph. D. program at Harvard in 1987, and escaped as quickly as possible, in 1990. In 1989, he was a fellow at Tanglewood, studying with Lukas Foss and Oliver Knussen. He resides in Brooklyn with his wife, pianist and ranteuse Kathleen Supové. His music ranges from the purely traditional classical media such as string quartet and orchestra to the entirely electronic and theatrical, though he is happiest between these extremes. He is frequently performed throughout the united states by groups such as the Seattle Symphony, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Paul Dresher Ensemble, Bang On A Can/SPIT Orchestra, Northern Kentucky Symphony, California EAR Unit, American Composers Orchestra, Fulcrum Point, twisted tutu, Music at the Anthology, Basso Bongo, Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, New Millennium Ensemble, Dinosaur Annex, Boston Musica Viva, American Baroque, Dogs of Desire chamber orchestra, Northern Kentucky Symphony, Meridian Arts Ensemble, and the Society for New Music, among others.

SWEDISH GRAMMY-WINNER IN THE INSTRUMENTAL GENREOn "Sex Tio två", my third album, the acoustic guitar once again takes the leading roll. For me, its direct, natural feel is preferable to that of the electric. Exhilarated melancholy, a feeling I love and try to convey, is easier to express with the acoustic guitar. On "Sex Tio Två" all the titles are in Swedish. There is a thought and source of inspiration behind that. A few examples; "Ebba Brun" ("Ebba" is a Swedish name. "Brun" means brown) - Ebba was the name of my family's brown Vorsteh dog, a happy, ball-crazy dog. "Gonda Strålar" ("Gonda" is a fantasy name. "Strålar" are beams)- is what I call the cleanest light, the light of dawn. "Dansadin..." ("Now you dance, you son of...") - is referring to the love-hate relationship I have with the guitar. Strictly but fairly it tells me - "practice more and I will give you what you want".The cover of "Sex Tio Två" is an oil painting of mine.I love to paint and feel that it influences ...
Delight, Touch And Inspire
Paul Kenyon Delight, Touch And Inspire CD  (2005)

With its joyful, simple opening, Haydn's last sonata gives no hint of the brilliant fireworks that follow. The opening Allegro bristles with imagination, challenging the pianist with brilliant double-thirds, octaves and even some unusually long pedal markings. The Adagio is a soulful aria. From the single opening chord, it spins out an abundance of melody -- like a song you hope will never end. Haydn loved practical jokes and in the Finale, he creates humor and mischief by interrupting the music's dancing with abrupt silences and pauses. The three preludes recorded here are from Debussy's second book of twelve, published in 1913. "Les Fées sont d'exquises danseuses" (The Sprites are Exquisite Dancers) allows the pianist's fingers to dance and leap across the keyboard. With rapid figurations that quickly cover much of the piano's range, the dances feature colorful harmonies juxtaposed with scant melodic fragments. Bruyères (Heather) is a musical landscape, suggesting the moors of the British Isles or the coast of Brittany. The melody is simple and the mood is warm-hearted, making this prelude singularly beautiful. General Lavine-Eccentric refers to a Paris vaudevillian who performed slapstick comedy dressed in an over-sized military uniform. Debussy reinforces the General's comic magnificence through the use of fanfare figures and tongue-in-cheek references to American ragtime. Robert Schumann had a gift for intriguing titles. For this monumental work he joins two words which had never been linked before in a piano work. We associate symphonies with large works for orchestra. Etudes are studies which test and expand the technical abilities of the pianist. The Symphonic Etudes was conceived as a set of studies in the form of variations. Nine of the twelve etudes are variations loosely derived from a forthright but somber theme. While the work does not follow a literal narrative program, it does suggest a grand romantic drama. As in many of his best-loved works, Schumann attributed this music to his two imaginary -- and conflicting -- muses, Florestan and Eusebius. As the series of etudes unfolds, scenes of heroic striving contrast with heartfelt lyricism. The etudes culminate in a triumphant grand march that resembles the "Davidsbundler" themes found in such works as the Papillons or Carnaval. This musical depiction of David conquering Goliath was a fixation for Schumann, who saw himself as the artistic underdog triumphing over impossible odds.Paul Kenyon is a performing pianist who plays diverse repertoire in a variety of venues and formats. He particularly enjoys welcoming audiences who are new to the concert listening experience. Through creative programming and spoken commentary, ...
