ESQ was first formed in spring 1998 by Richard Nelson Hall in The San Francisco Bay Area. As implied by their full name "Extra Sonic Quartet" their mission is to make the most out of their instruments with deeper grooves and richer sounds. They are an instrumental jazz quartet comprising of acoustic & electric pianos, guitars and basses with traps drums.Their "Dizzy" album pays tribute to the music of Dizzy Gillespie by including arrangements of four songs made famous by him, there are also four original compositions together four other carefully selected pieces that explore the wide spectrum of jazz styles that represent the ESQ sound. There is Salsa, Samba & Straight-ahead; there is Bebop, Funk & House.Through extensive live performances on stages large and small, the members of ESQ have developed a special empathy for spontaneous creativity. This is what jazz should be about - thoughtful arrangements, lyrical lines and solid grooves with balanced and accommodating individual performances that make the ensemble exponentially better than the sum of its parts. "Dizzy" is a studio recording that captures the live sound of acoustic jazz, the culmination of five years of musical friendships: Richard Nelson Hall (pianos) Scott Foster (guitars) Andrew Higgins (basses) and Ben Leinbach (drums). Dizzy album
$18.99 Dave grew up surrounded by the active folk scene of Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. during the 1960s and 70s, where he was exposed to a variety of musical traditions and was inspired by performers like Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie. At age 9, Dave wrote his first song - the same year he met the legendary Libba Cotton ("Freight Train") and was invited to accompany her on stage. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he continued to write and perform, both solo and with several bands in the D.C. area, London, and New York City. He studied music and philosophy at Columbia and Oxford universities, earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California, Davis (1997), and promptly retired from academia to dedicate himself to music. "Dr. Dave" also released his debut CD, "Candy Shower," in 1997 and followed this up with a live CD recording, "Snapshots" (1998). Both albums met with critical acclaim and tracks from the CDs have received honors in national songwriting competitions and airplay on commercial, public, and grass-roots community radio stations, nationwide. Having paid his dues playing at bars, restaurants and coffeehouses, Dave has built up an active mailing list of over 4,000 fans throughout the country and is now performing as an opening and featured act at some of the better-known listening rooms, performing arts centers, and college venues."Heartfelt, inspired songwriting...with a delivery both biting and assured." Paul Zollo, SingOut! Magazine "Blending of beautiful lyrics with an equally gorgeous melody...infectious." Andy Susman, Broward FolkClub News (4-99) "Dave's wit presents itself gently enough for everyone to understand, yet with a not-so-subtle sophistication that allows you to process it at your own pace." David Meyers, The Davis Enterprise/Winters Express (9-3-98) "Nachmanoff has a real knack for delivering a tune with an acoustic style that's somewhere between the easy-going charm of Arlo Guthrie and the raw energy of Bruce Springsteen" David Meyers, The Davis Enterprise "The thing that first struck me about this group ...
| | Barbara Lea Melody Lingers On CD (2002)
Dizzy CD music
$18.99 One of the foremost interpreters of the popular song since the 1950s, Barbara Lea like a good wine seems to get better and better with time. Her latest effort, recorded in 1997 but not released until 2002, offers a play list of 20 tunes written for the movies or musical stage. Most are instantly recognizable, others such as Irving Berlin's "Monkey Doodle-Doo," which showed up the Marx Brothers' 1925 stage hit Cocoanuts are not likely to be at the top of anyone's list of most oft-played songs. At the same time, Lea dusts off gems that should be heard far more frequently than they are including the Jimmy McHugh/Harold Adamson "The Music Stopped" from the film Higher and Higher and a favorite of Frank Sinatra. The basis for the agenda of selections comes from the late Roy Hemming's Discovering Great Singers of Classic Pop, to whom she dedicates this CD. Lea is a cabaret singer in the tradition of Elisabeth Welch, Sylvia Syms, and Mabel Mercer, who, with little more than piano in tow, were absolute masters at storytelling against a musical backdrop, the essence of cabaret. This individuality is especially conspicuous on such cuts as "Call Me Irresponsible," "But Not for Me," and "The Nearness of You." Lea's renditions of these tunes captures their romance, pathos, hopes, victories, and disappointments without vocal gimmickry or hand-wringing, another characteristic of an expert performer from the domain of cabaret. The singer is joined by Wes McAfee, bassist Boots Maleson, and drummer Dave Ratajczak on this excursion. But it's the piano of McAfee that's responsible for the bulk of Lea's support. The Melody Lingers On is a quintessential testimonial to the marriage of great lyrical material and a performer who can deliver. Recommended without reservation. ~ Dave Nathan
REVIEWS OF "THE MELODY LINGERS ON": Francis Davis - SOUND AND VISIONI'm going to insist you hear this because: (1) accompanied by a rhythm section led by the attentive pianist McAfee, Lea -- the logical successor to Mabel Mercer as Queen Mother of cabaret -- turns in definitive interpretations of 20 great songs familiar and obscure... (2) this is the only place to find the slowed-down, heartbreaking "Begin the Beguine" that has been a centerpiece of her shows for the past decade..." Alan Bargebuhr - CADENCE...the ...
| | Larry Quartet Mcdonough Simple Gifts CD (2005)
Dizzy music CDs
$18.99 "Larry McDonough's long-awaited new recording serves up divergent delights, from a reconstructed holiday chestnut to inside-out renditions of jazz standards, from harmonically and rhythmically altered traditional melodies to a trio of original tunes. With a feathery touch that recalls Bill Evans but with more fingers and a unique approach to time that makes the most worn carol or standard a new adventure, Simple Gifts proves to be anything but "simple"-but, for those fortunate enough to hear this music, it is indeed a gift." --Andrea Canter, Jazz Police"The Larry McDonough Quartet in a Minneapolis based ensemble of jazz virtuosos. $9.69 All music by The Judybats, all lyrics by Jeff Heiskell except "Perfumed Lies" (lyrics by Johnny Sughrue).
The debut by folk-influenced college rockers the Judybats, 1991's Native Son, is an extremely uneven record. The high points are quite high indeed, but there's an awful lot of filler too. Conveniently, however, the good stuff and the not-so-good is segregated from one another, with the six best songs appearing at the front of the album and the B-squad material relegated to the second half. The peaks include the soaring title track and the sunny "Daylight," ...
