Eyes Of Mars
$14.29 Brian Bromberg's fourth recording for the Artistry label, and first since they were acquired by the Mack Avenue label, is a fairly predictable program of contemporary jazz, commercial funk, and pop song covers, as well as uptown New York City R&B-type dance tunes that should appeal to the urban crowd. His prominent electric bass guitar always has a retro feel going back to Ralphe Armstrong, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, and James Jamerson, but retains ...

Eyes Of Mars
$16.39 From Erroll Garner to Cecil Taylor to Bill Evans, and from Chick Corea to Thelonious Monk, a wide variety of acoustic jazz pianists have thrived in the time-honored piano trio setting (piano, bass, and drums) over the years. It's a setting that has never gone ...

| | Allen Houser Sextet Stolen Moments CD (2004)
Eyes Of Mars
$9.49 The best jazz is recorded in a completely relaxed environment--- with no time constraints. In this congenial atmosphere, true improvising and the unexpected can take place. That's why most of my favorite records are "Live At The..." and why I am so happy with this offering. This Sextet has been together for over three years. The Bobs - Balthis, Butta and Jones, were with me on my previous recording, The Allen Houser Sextet Live At The One Step Down (ARS005). George Hyde, who played with me for several years at Bertha's Restaurant in Baltimore, and Paul Hannah, are the new faces. What you will hear is the best of our music selected from over a dozen recording sessions.Musicians and fans of live jazz have benefited from a parade of recording technology creations. (Up until the invention of the synthesizer, that is.) When the 33 1/3 LP replaced the 78-rpm record, it enabled jazz musicians to stretch out and play as if it were a live, nightclub performance. Kenny Dorham's Una Mas is a good example of this. The compact disc has doubled the playing time of many of the best LP's. Our hope is that you will enjoy these ...

Eyes Of Mars
$12.15 This album is me playing the hymns I grew up hearing every Sunday. I can still remember Dad playing the piano and Granny singing in the choir, and the way that whole experience became a part of me after a while. These arrangements are the way I heard my dad play them, or at least as close as I can get. No two people’s styles can be exactly the same… my style has been influenced by jazz, as well as piano players like Elton John and Billy Joel…so no matter how I try, I can never completely duplicate my dad’s style. Perhaps it could be said that my playing of these songs is “a poor attempt to imitate the man… I’m just a living legacy to the leader of the band.”I wanted this album to be one that both my grandmothers could listen to, but it didn’t work out that way. As I was finishing it, I found out that Grandmama was in the hospital, and that this time it did not look like she was going to get better. She was gone before she could hear it… she passed away in November of 2005… but I did have most of it done, and it was played at her funeral. My other grandmother, “Granny,” has always loved the song “When They Ring Those Golden Bells,” so I put it on at the end. ...

The tuning used on all of the open tuned guitars on this recording is an open E form, or a modified version of the same. By modified I mean that though the key may change from either tuning the guitar to a higher pitch or down to a lower pitch, I'm still using the same open E form. (Except for the title song #1, "Handsful O' Blues" and song #9, "Katrina Blues", these were played in an open E minor form.)If that sounds a little confusing, think of it like this. If you've tuned your guitar to open E (low-EBEG#BE-high) but desire to play in an open G, you could simply add a capo on the third fret. This then is essentially like creating a barred G major chord and looks like this: (low-GDGBDG-high). ...
