If it's true what they say about nothing being more dangerous than an idea whose time has come, then drummer extraordinaire Rayford Griffin's long-awaited first CD as a leader is destined to have a ruthless impact. In his journey, Rayford has lent his drumming magic to a diverse resume of world class artists ranging from Michael Jackson, Stanley Clarke, George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty to Bette Midler, Anita Baker and Patrice Rushen. Now Rayford emerges from the drum riser to equally showcase his writing, arranging, drumming and his singing gifts on his phenomenal CD Debut "Rebirth of The Cool."Much of the album was conceived and recorded in Rayford's Razoredge studio, allowing him plenty of relaxed time to develop the material along the way. "I didn't want to beat people over the head with an album of drum solos, odd meters and fast playing," Rayford shares. "Though I do flex some of those muscles, I wanted to be as musical as possible with something for everybody and also show how drums could be a part of that without being offensive."That's quite a statement coming from a drummer whose concert solos have brought fellow players and lay people alike to their feet with awe, appreciation and an adrenaline rush. It was the drum solos of Art Blakey and Max Roach on albums by his late, lamented uncle, trumpeter Clifford Brown, that lured him to the drums. Griffin is a technical master who brings to his towering arsenal of drums and percussion toys an engrained knack for groove and a graceful style that is always complementary to anyone with whom he plays. Rebirth of the Cool completes this portrait of the artist as so much more. The album is a decidedly personal and contemporary take on Rayford's appreciation of tradition. The heart of the music is rooted in a tangy fusion of raw funk and relentlessly swingin' jazz ("Lids and Squares" and "Kings"), but there are also songs of melodic beauty and radio-friendly panache ("Everytime I See U" and "In Your Eyes"). There are blazin' jazz-rock fusion workouts ("Coffee" and "Folake'") that will have aspiring drummers getting out there notepads. There is also a dynamic straight-ahead number ("Jazzi Ray") that recalls the aural signature of big band great, Neil Hefti.
Longtime studio musician Rayford Griffin steps out on his own with Rebirth of the Cool. Conceptual conceits aside -- this ain't no Birth of the Cool -- Griffin has crafted an average smooth jazz album that occasionally features more hardcore jazz improvisation than one might expect on a similar album in the genre. A drummer by trade, Griffin also takes lead vocal duties, showcasing his pleasant laid-back style on the title track -- a cute history lesson of bop-era aesthetics. Despite an all-star cast of musicians including tenor saxophonist Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Michael "Patches" Stewart, and bassist Stanley Clarke, this is unfortunately fairly tepid stuff -- trite lyrics and synth-heavy production -- that holds few surprises for most jazz fans. This isn't to say it is a total waste of time; on the contrary, Stewart's extended improvisation on "Lids and Squares" is reminiscent of '70s-era Donald Byrd, and many of the other tracks evince an improvisational edginess uncommon in most jazz-pop releases. ~ Matt Collar

Rebirth Of The Cool
$15.19 Born in New Jersey, vocalist/trombonist Gerard Carelli moved across the river where he enjoys a career as orchestra leader, producer, entertainment director, and jazz/cabaret performer. Along the way he studied jazz at North Texas State University, was part of Ray Charles' band, and played for such singers as Rosemary Clooney and Mel Tormé. Much of what he has assimilated from these experiences culminate in his second self-produced album. Using charts prepared by John Oddo and joined by top New York musicians, Carelli runs through a mostly standards program. His trombone recalls Tommy Dorsey with its mellowness, which is dubbed in to support his singing. He also solos with one of the more engaging efforts with the trombone on "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?," which is done without benefit of vocals. His voice is light and appealing, in tune, and lyrically literate. Carelli is especially adept at up-tempo pieces like a fun-filled "Leader of a Big-Time Band" and "New York, New York." But on ballads with his light voice, he sometimes struggles to project the appropriate emotional conviction. So on tunes like "So in Love," after a slow opening chorus, he shifts to a medium tempo for the second one and it works. Given the classy cast of musicians, top-notch ensemble playing is expected and is received. In fact, the album is worth obtaining just for the musicianship with the vocalizing a nice bonus. Some tracks to mark in this regard are "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top" and "Once in Love With Amy," with Jay Leonhart's bass having a lot to say on the latter track. Carelli gets better with each release, which ...

| | Denny Carleton Color With Crayons CD (1985)
Rebirth Of The Cool
$9.35 A suite of an hour or so of song fragments that flit in and out of hearing like snatches of a dream, woven together and embellished with odd reverb and sound effects. Most mainstream (and some underground) listeners will not be able to get past the sometimes primitive sound quality, especially some of the earliest parts of the piece, recorded with a thin and especially cheesy Casio. The sound quality does get better over much of the rest of the tape, and more importantly, it's an inspired work. The guitar-driven passages can be as catchy as the best power-pop, and are sung with an exuberant compassion; the experimental treatments and segues make the fragments add up to something more interesting and intriguing than they would have sounded if they were simply fleshed out into an album of normal pop tunes. If only the production and editing were better, this would be one of the most interesting overlooked albums of the '80s. As it is, it's still plenty engaging, if not that easy to find, with a personal auteurish quality that rarely makes it onto more professional-minded releases. Color with Crayons was issued on CD in 2000 on Green Light, available through www.dennycarleton.com. ~ Richie Unterberger
Denny carleton has been a long lasting figure in The Cleveland Ohio USA music scene. In 1983, Greenlight( his record company) released it's first tape, Dennis's "In With The Out Takes". This was followed in 1984 by the unreleased Lost Souls' recording sessions. Both cassettes were well received locally, and distributed by Important Records out of N.Y., when L.A.'s Option magazine, and Gorilla Beat from West Germany reviewed both tapes favorably. After being reviewed by these international magazines, Dennis was contacted by ...
