With that kind of start, her encounter with stage and lights was inevitable.Breggett's music background is as important to her as is the education she received at LSU. And in a short period of time and maximum effort Breggett is in demand well into 2005.Now with the debut release of "The Opportune Time..." Breggett Rideau has garnered critical acclaim not only from local publications and internet sources, but also from international institutions. By the invitation of Dr. Gene Cho, Ph.D. Regents Professor University of North Texas and Hang Zhou Conservatory, Breggett will perform and lecture at Shanghai Conservatory, Shanghai, China in the spring of 2005. She will make history as the first woman of color / jazz artist from the United States to attend.Breggett Rideau's horizon reaches far into the future. | | Liz Johnson One More For The Road CD (2002)
Opportune Time... songs
$17.09 Nashville-based jazz singer Liz Johnson has put together a terrific collection of vintage songs on her CD, with fine backing by pianist Lori Mechem, bassist Jerry Navarro, and drummer Tom Giampietro. After a uplifting opener, "My Shining Hour," she switches gears to a lightly swinging, somewhat obscure song associated with Billie Holiday, "You Let Me Down," which is accented by Roland Barber's almost mocking muted trombone. Veteran Nashville pianist Beegie Adair (who has appeared as a guest on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz series) accompanies Johnson's moving vocal on "One for My Baby" and the lively "Dancing on the Ceiling." The singer switches to alto sax to trade licks with guest tenor saxophonist Rahsaan Jelani Barber for a soft but impressive interpretation of Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer" and Bobby Timmons' hard bop classic "Moanin'." This enjoyable CD is available through www.lilyrecords.com. ~ Ken Dryden
Update 6/20/04Liz will be performing in the Montreux Jazz Fest vocal competiton this July! Wish her luck!Check it out at www.montreuxjazz.com***********Blame it on Basie. Or maybe the Wilson Middle School Jazz Band. One encounter with a swinging big band, and Liz Johnson's fate was sealed. "I remember one day in sixth grade walking into the gym where the band was rehearsing," Johnson reminisces about the moment she fell in love with jazz. "I couldn't get enough. I knew right then it was what I wanted to do." Born in Rockford, Ill., Liz Johnson had already been a musician since the age of six. A flute player, she found the transition to saxophone a "natural progression" and studied the instrument through high school and then college, playing in local jazz bands. Johnson's sophisticated alto sax has been said to "reflect both the cool, serene influence of Paul Desmond and the more emphatic attack of Art Pepper." (The Nashville Scene, March 2002). But while sax was her first jazz instrument, Johnson discovered her true passion in her voice -- giving her music the added influence of great jazz instrumentalists and vocal stylists alike. Fate gave her a chance to move to the South's country music mecca for reasons entirely unrelated to music. But Johnson had a hunch that a place named Music City U.S.A. must have a jazz scene. And she was ...
