Windham Hill's successful A Winter's Solstice series started during the label's first year in 1985, and has continued at roughly a new volume every two or three years, each installment containing a bright wintry blend of classical music, reimagined hymns, chiming carols, and atmospheric compositions that have since garnered the name new age. This two-disc set picks some of the best and brightest moments from the series' first eight volumes, including David Qualey's guitar arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Liz Story's piano rendition of "Greensleeves," harpist Lisa Lynne's "Northern Lights," and guitarist W.G. Snuffy Walden's sad, haunting "Moon Lake" on disc one. Disc two offers up the Modern Mandolin Quartet's take on "Trepak," drawn from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite," William Coulter's lovely "Rain into Snow," and Darol Anger's reshaping of the traditional "I Saw Three Ships." Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding an ethereal sheen to the more angular approaches of the singer's previous work.
Here the idiosyncratic Icelander lets loose with her full range of vocal stylings, though even her most innocent, little-girl-lost persona can't hide her steely intelligence. The album-opening "Hidden Place" starts with foreboding electronic rhythms--it's about unspoken or unfulfilled desires, and it's simultaneously exotic-sounding and dripping with melancholy, a mood that persists until the gently cathartic "Undo," with its mantra-like line "It's not meant to be a strife/It's not meant to be a struggle uphill." 21 Days was my very first concept album.It was mid-january 2007- I had just returned from the US, from Denmark and from Holland. I had experienced some succes at a music showcase in Holland, and life and my prospects with music, were exciting and adventurous!And here I was returning to my everyday life in Cologne and it seemed pretty dull. My daughter Mira-Belle had gone away to live with my parents in Copenhagen for 3 months, to go to Danish school, so for the first time in my adult life, I was on my own, just me, no responsibilities, no picking up from school, nor going to the art academy where i studied. No getting up in the morning, I was free to be me and stay up and play and compose all night. So it took a little getting used to it ...I must say I really enjoyed it!The process.
