| | Larry Steen First Move CD Larry Steen Discography of CDs
On his ASCAP award-winning, debut recording, "First Move," composer/bassist/producer Larry Steen is joined by jazz luminaries Ernie Watts, Dave Weckl, Bill Cunliffe, Jeff Beal and Otmaro Ruiz, among others, in the creation of a rich milieu of "world-jazz" textured with authentic West African, Brazilian, Caribbean and funk-r'n'b rhythms and the sophisticated harmonic sensibility of jazz and classical music. Jimmy Haslip (of the Yellowjackets) is the executive producer of the CD.
After spending much of his career in a sideman capacity, Larry Steen made his recording debut as a leader with 1996's First Move, a promising release that emphasizes the electric bassist's own compositions. This CD (which employs such notables as saxman Ernie Watts, pianist/keyboardist Bill Cunliffe, and drummer Dave Weckl) essentially falls into the fusion category, although it isn't the type of fusion that favors chops for the sake of chops. Steen's chops are impressive, but instead of beating listeners over the head with technique, he generally prefers to be lyrical and tell stories. Many of those stories have a global, multicultural outlook, and the improviser takes us to Cuba with "Seven Come Five," the Middle East with the title song, and Africa with "Nigerian Dream" and "Salif Meets Ralph." But instead of actually using ethnic instruments such an Arabic oud, a Turkish saz, or an African kalimba, Steen sticks with standard jazz instruments. In 1996, Steen was hardly the first jazzman to experiment with world music -- everyone from Duke Ellington to John Coltrane to Yusef Lateef had long since fused jazz with music from all over the globe. But while this album isn't innovative, it does have some freshness. First Move indicated that Steen was someone to watch out for. ~ Alex Henderson
Personnel includes: Larry Steen (keyboards, acoustic bass, fretted & fretless electric basses); Ernie Watts (soprano & alto saxophones); Jeff Beal (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bill Cunliffe (piano, keyboards); Dave Weckl (drums).

First Move
$12.99 This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.
As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC'sà," "Buck Em Down," (a perfect example of Black Moon's fondness for choosing jazzy loops as the foundations for epic tales of criminal adventurism, a style perfected on "Shit iz Real") ...

| | Michael Camacho Just For You CD (2007)
First Move
$17.69 Michael Camacho is another vocalist in the pop/jazz style of Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick, Jr., John Pizzarelli, Peter Cincotti, and Michael Bublé. His limited range, pillow talk techniques, and softer inflections suggest all of the aforementioned singers, without Sinatra's panache, command, or charisma. A program of mostly standards has Camacho singing quite pleasantly, crooning with a copped maturity that is very typecast. The several ballads included here are not distinctive -- well done but not all that thrilling. What distinguishes Camacho are his originals and interpretations. There's some attempted and nicely achieved scat on his tune "Just for You," good ideas during the vocal/brushed drum intro of the upbeat "Blue Room," and a nice Latin slant on "I'm Old Fashioned." Three pieces of Camacho's are co-written with French bassist François Moutin: the sweet ballad "My Friend," the inquisitive "Hey You," and a great "Here's to the Blues." Camacho's 3/4 take on "Norwegian Wood" has the most original approach and genuine energy. Known for his work with Bublé, guitarist Randy Napoleon shows up here and there, while Moutin's bass is the most prominent pure jazz sound on the date, with saxophonist Dan Block playing a perfunctory role on occasion. Because of the paucity of male jazz songsters, it's likely Camacho will find an audience that wants to hear this type of light, sentimental, predictable music. ~ Michael G. Nastos
Michael's new cd is for you and everyone who loves good Jazz. Michael Camacho is not new to the music world. It wasn't long ago he did an international million seller but today Michael is doing what he loves best....singing jazz standards from the Great American Songbook and writing what may become new standards in the future.Of the twelve selections in the CD , Mr. Camacho wrote five of them including the title and he gives new life to songs written by Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael, Lennon and McCartney, just to name a few. This record by Michael is one of the most relaxing and at the same time compelling vocal work in the traditional ...

| | Rosanne Drago Hot Sophisticated Jazz Now CD (2005)
First Move
$18.99 Rosanne Drago was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where she began studying classical voice at age 14 at the Cleveland Music School Settlement. At 17, she was a featured vocalist with Hank Geer, a great musician and jazz legend in Cleveland. They performed at the famed restaurant and jazz club, Sammy's in the Flats. She also studied with renowned vocal coach, Marietta Richards. Marietta introduced her to musical theater, where she began studying acting with acclaimed professionals from the Cleveland Playhouse. She pursued this for fifteen years, starring in several lead roles, including Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Rizzo in Grease, and Bianca in Kiss Me Kate.In the mid 90's she came to Los Angeles on vacation. Curious about the jazz scene, she went to the Money Tree in Toluca Lake to see the great duo of Jack Sheldon and Ross Tompkins. Jack graciously got her up to sing and apparently liked what he heard, because he said "Rosanne, you should be in New York or Los Angeles. Things can happen for you, but you need to relocate." She took that advice and within a few months had moved to Los Angeles. With her heart back to jazz she has been able to assemble a group of the finest musicians in Los Angeles (namely: Jack Sheldon and Nolan Shaheed on trumpet, Ray ...
