| | Abigail Band Payne About A Cake CD Abigail Band Payne Discography of CDs
The Abigail Payne Band came together in New York in June 2004. Though the idea was conceived long before by singer/songwriter Abigail Payne, it took some time to find the right musicians to create a very specific sound on this personal project. She first began working with guitarist Oren Neiman in 2001, performing jazz standards in a duo setting and in various ensembles. After a debut performance of her original songs at the Bitter End in February 2004, Koby Hayon joined the group as bassist. The band sampled New York drummers before finding that the missing piece was the then nineteen-year old Kenny Shaw. The band became complete in June 2004, and immediately began recording and playing throughout New York City as well as touring in Canada and Western New York. With Payne's affinity for such emotional lyricists as Cole Porter, accompanied by her innate rock sensibility and the band's expansive jazz experience, the sound of their new release, "About a Cake" is at once sophisticated and raw. About A Cake
$12.69 New Ark's a Moverin by Amiri Baraka Kimako's Blues PeopleJust word-sampled an old gospel horse "Old Ark's a Moverin" to lay out a more recent phenomenon. Old Ark you know, "New-Ark" (the actual charter name), is this city, of some 275,000, 12 miles from "The Apple", called now, on the young side, "Brick City". Where we have travailed and struggled so many years.Just a minute ago, New Ark was known as "Bad place, tough place", leading car theft town, Black-town Criminal, you like we sposed to be. But now we got a questionable "Renaissance" arriving, for whom? Good question. Buildings going up. Lotta people priced outta here. Buppies spotted like Killer Ants in SF tales, headed for here, middle management for Iblis & them. But inside, and aside from that and them. There's a real rebirthing going on. This one for sure on the side of the people. A rebirth of indigenous arts. Not just hollow institutional hype which brings the big money acts in and leaves the homegrown frustrated in the dust, hence creating no real educational growth for the indigenous folk. But now there's music, poetry, drama, painting, plus sharp political dialogue and motion being and bopping all over the place! Halim Suliman is a key figure in this new uprising, he is one the most New Ark' characterizing poets here. Always somewhere running the word-music down. Halim is one of the city's best-known Djali (Griot in French) running the old time Djeli Ya (like Shango make the sky holler). A regular at Kimako's Blues People, Verse 4 Verse, of the indigenous verse venues as well as NJPAC. Suliman was a long time member of Blue Ark, the Word Ship, performed in, Berlin, Universities all across the country, featured on the Enja (German) CD with Blue Ark, Real Song, live performances in Baraka"s "Song", poet-singer in "Dr. King and the Mountain", "The Life of Willie the Lion Smith", "Black ...
