It's a thick but spacious mix of low-tuned guitars, forefront bass, vintage-style drums & intense vocals. Driven by twangy baritone electric guitar on some tracks, alter-tuned acoustic on others, the songs range from the brawny old-school soul attack of "Walk with Me", to the intimacy of "i surrender" and "hush" to the raging slide blues of "Southbound #5". Bandleader TR Kelley's roots are in surf, country and R&B overlaid with the altered tunings and creative textures of West-Coast folk psychedelia. Anchored by the sparkle and snappy groove of Randy Hamme's vintage drums, the songs are fully realized yet never overproduced. Before his public emergence as a drummer, Randy Hamme worked as a sound engineer. His creative use of both analog tape and digital formats in the recording for this CD is evident in the lush saturation of the instrumental tracks and the intimacy and power of the vocals."Odd Birds" is a vibrant quilt of ideas. Bossa-nova, spaghetti-western twang, a Mersey-beat twist, a live mono soundscape, even an 80's-style power ballad all make an appearance. Die Schlauberger's third album is essentially an extension of Total Kaos. Like that album, this contains a mix of traditional Alpine songs and band originals and on rare occasions flirts with the notion of German folk-rock as heard on "Du Sollst Nicht Weinen." "Fiddler's Polka" is an upbeat country-polka number featuring the fiddle playing of Frank Urbanovitch from the Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra. The title song and "Sweet Elizabeth" employ a heavier electric guitar sound, displaying this band at its best. "Gitarrenmückl" is an instrumental featuring the impressive picking of Thomas Staab in which he recalls both the countrypolitan style of Chet Atkins and the flash of Jeff Beck. Social conscience in action: a singer-songwriter-social entrepreneur realizing lyrics thru life, and djembe based rig of "Buster" Braxton. Greg Allen is the songwriter, singer, and guitaristGranville "Buster" Braxton is the percussionist and sings backing vocals.Formed in 1997. Greg and Granville played briefly with Granite Ghost before conspiring to create a unique platform for Greg's original style / approach to lyrics and songwriting. That style, now dubbed "eclectoplasmacoustic folk'n rock" (tm), is rooted mostly in traditional/folk, rock, and pop music - but with an important emphasis on two things:1 - lyrics that exist (and seem to stand out) for the sake of the story and poetry at hand, and 2 - musicianship that leaves room for the lyrics!As one listener noted, "When I listen to your songs I listen carefully. The first line or two pulls me in and I find myself paying less attention to what I am doing and more attention to what you are saying - the story you are telling." Continuing his song-a-week creations, Jonathan Coulton moves forward with his songs of heartache and loneliness, but indeed moves into geekier territory in this second installment. The album opens with a randomized stream-of-consciousness description of pictures displayed on Flickr, and other songs touch on such hot topics as extraplanetary prison colonies, competitive curling, and aging ravers. With that said, however, each song again encapsulates some element of the human experience, a single emotion. "You Could Be Here" uses a mall vendor as protagonist in a clear array of longing and anguish. Companionate love gets a run in "I Will," as does a mix of unadulterated joy, energy, and pity in a tribute to a rave dancer. A song theoretically about curling unveils a thread of longing for recognition. The bluesy "Don't Talk to Strangers" pleads for a lover not to leave. As with all of Coulton's work, there's a subtext underneath most of the songs, using highly crafted arrangements to lighten an otherwise heavy pill of pathos. There is, of course, lighter fare as well, some of it even more enjoyable. "Stroller Town" lets Coulton explore surf rock à la the Beach Boys in the context of baby strollers, and the cult favorite "Re: Your Brains" presents a rock anthem give and take between an office worker and his zombie coworkers, all in office ...
