Following up the Minimize to Maximize compilation is not an easy task, as Minus stacked the decks and had one quality track following another from their label stable, which could easily go track for track, producer for producer, with any other label in the electronic music world circa 2005. But never one to rest on his laurels, Minus label manager Clark Warner and label owner Richie Hawtin have found another crop of producers who continue to push the boundaries of the label's aesthetic in new directions. For min2Max, Heartthrob's "Baby Kate" starts things off with its haunting main keyboard melody being worked to death, it's easily one of the best things to come out of the label, ever. The Run Stop Restore trio of Troy Pierce, Magda, and Marc Houle all make return appearances in solo form, with Magda's "Staring Contest" being the strongest of the three. Newcomers like Berg Nixon, Gaiser, Tractile, and JPLS all make strong contributions that carry the compilation to being one of the more engaging electronic music compilations of 2006. ~ Rob Theakston

Min2max album
$12.25 If nothing else, it can be asserted that Georgia Anne Muldrow is unconventional. To say only this would be to seriously undermine her talents, but the fact that Muldrow refuses to stick to modern (or past, for that matter) definitions of song structure and composition is probably the most conspicuous characteristic of her full-length debut, Olesi: Fragments of an Earth. The album is comprised of 21 tracks, most of which are well under the three-minute mark. This actually ends up working rather nicely, because Muldrow's style -- a kind of stream-of-consciousness, vaguely disjointed, meandering delivery that draws from modern creative jazz, spoken word, spirituals, and soul -- can be hard to follow at times. This made her EP a little difficult (or at least tiring) to listen to, but here, with shorter songs, ...

Min2max album
$20.75 Dublin band Saville are musical time travellers extraordinaire, blending all the best bits of pop into one completely original package. All four members are passionate about music, and the band is known for their innate ability to traverse a wide range of styles and genres with apparent ease. Not only can they turn their collective hands to Burt Bacharach inspired pop, Byrdsian rock, and guitar-driven indie tunes, they can also throw in the odd stray reggae rhythm, and can come up with something as unexpected as the Jacques Brel-like \'City of Engineers\'. Purposely eclectic and openly acknowledged influences come together in original songs in the jangly Rickenbacker-drivenguitar pop tradition. Saville are Ken O\'Duffy on vocals and guitar, brother Vinny on bass, Tony\"Tosh\" Flood on guitar, piano, vocals and assorted other instruments, and Joey Fitzgerald on drums. All hail from Coolock on Dublin\'s northside, and all have been friends since their schooldays. Their self-financed debut album Is Anybody Happier Today, released in 2000 on their own bdb label received rave reviews, and was declared one of Ireland\'s finest albums in recent years. The band received tremendous accolades for their superb grasp of songwriting and pop sensibility, and soon they were playing to packed houses in Dublin and beyond. They were the first unsigned band to appear on BBC\'s prestigious music programme Top Of The Pops 2, and also earned an appearance on MTV\'s Unsigned. The follow-up album Somnambular Ballads, released October 2003 on the Dublin indie Reekus label, was again hailed as \"not just one of the best Irish albums of 2003, but one of the best albums of the year, period\". (Evening Herald), withall the critics agreeing that the album highlights the band\'s talent for fusing heavenly pop with masterful songwriting. And let\'s face it, soul and funk are not genres that we Irish have traditionally excelled in, but with their third studio album Dublin pop four-piece Saville have broken the mould and succeeded where others have failed. This is probably because there\'s no sense of imitation here - it\'s more like an organic merging of genres, identity and influences. Nostalgia seems an appropriate title for an album clearly influenced by classic soul and 70s funk as well as the 60s pop rock of The Beatles, The Kinks and The Zombies, but it is the lyrics of the title track that ...
