| | Alpha Conspiracy Forward Rewinding CD Alpha Conspiracy Discography of CDs
A limited edition release, the experimental "forward rewinding" EP features two favorites from the IDM/electro scene battling it out in binary form. Features the forceful electro-pop of the low technicians on "sunday monday morning", as well as the alpha conspiracy's brilliant, moody, interpretation of the Howard Jones classic, "things can only get better".--the alpha conspiracy has been a paragon of smart, structured electronica for the last two years. their debut disc, "cipher", was a journey into percussively intricate IDM, with shimmering layers of kaleidoscopic sounds and at times an almost startling harmonic complexity. Even more intriguing are the constant references to song structures usually more prevalent in indie rock and synth-pop. The leader of this sonic brigade is the studiously accomplished Andrew Sega, who has been doing electronic music under various monikers since 1993. In the mid-90's he helped form the music collective "Five Musicians", with such comrades as Jaakko Manninen (md / Merck Records), and Hans van Vliet (hunz / beanbag). Later, he decided that it was time for a new electronic project that focused on inter-species communication: between trip-hop and indie-rock, between emo and glitch-IDM. This is the alpha conspiracy's mission.low technicians is the new solo project of Brad MacAllister, who is the keyboardist and general studio gangster behind the dark industrial/EBM outfit, CTRL. Many years spent in the dismal wasteland that is central Pennsylvania eventually led to his complete mental breakdown and subsequent move to Austin, TX. After three albums with CTRL, songs on various compilations (including Cleopatra Records "The Unquiet Grave" series), he is branching out into new sounds. Inspired by the gritty harshness of modern EBM, yet with organic synth-pop roots, the low technicians sound is intense, passionate, and driving. Forward Rewinding
$17.69 Dutch composer Stanley Swinkels grew up with the minimalist ebb and flow of American ambient pioneer Steve Reich and British luminary Brian Eno – ensuring Stratradialis follows in their footsteps, albeit sounding a little more modernistic.Nine lengthy pieces of music dictate sensitive ambiences throughout, and pleasantly variable too. Most albums of this ilk tend to run with a consistent theme, but Swinkels manages to glide from dreamy atmospheres full of optimism through to dark, mysterious fixations. The opening a.m. Garden is beautifully crafted, a silky textural piece containing meditative synths invaded by nostalgic field recordings of streams, bird chatter and barely audible children’s voices. As one falls deeper into Stratradialis evocative haze, the album gets progressively deeper and darker – perhaps even sinister, witness the brooding Scimerian Silence, where sounds warp backwards, alerted by sudden piano strikes and the grainy background patter of speckled interference. The choral chants of Dormitator, meanwhile, seep effortlessly into Swinkels multi-layered one-fingered synthesiser lines, spawning elegantly ...
| | Rosetta Hightower CD (1970)
Forward Rewinding
$13.85 In a happenstance guaranteed to foul up discographies for eternity, in 1971 Rosetta Hightower released two different LPs for two different British labels with very similar titles. One, for Rediffusion, consisted exclusively of cover versions of soul hits, and was titled Rosetta Hightower. The other, for CBS, put the emphasis very much on material specifically supplied to Hightower, and was simply titled Hightower. (Adding to the confusion, both albums were reissued on CD, within a couple years of each other, by the same British label, with different bonus tracks added to each.) Hightower -- the subject of this review -- was very much the superior recording, and not just because it's not a relative all-covers throwaway. The backup musicians are of an all-star caliber, including Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Henry McCullough, Harold McNair, and ex-Blind Faith/Family man Rick Grech. What's more, Grech and McNair teamed up to write four of the LP's songs. While it might be more a soul record than anything else, there are also far more rock and folk influences at work than there are on most early-'70s soul LPs; Doris Troy's Apple recordings might serve as a rough comparison, though there's more pop and folk at work on Hightower. It's not a great album, but it's a satisfying one, especially when it gets into almost folky singer/songwriter territory on "Michael" on "What a Day It's Been," two of the four numbers contributed by Kenny Craddock and Colin Gibson. The 2008 CD reissue on RPM adds all eight tracks from her four non-LP 1969-1971 singles as bonus tracks. All of these additions are considerably more pop-soul in orientation -- including material penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Tony Macaulay and Geoff Stephens, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni, as well as a couple by Hightower herself -- though not in a bad way, making for decent soul that managed the feat of sounding commercial without selling well. Another oddity among the non-LP cuts is "Persuader," which sounds like the theme song for a hit thriller movie that never was, co-written by none other than Dudley Moore. ~ Richie Unterberger
