Some folks call 'em "manbashers," but the men standing in the back of the room at Lindy Gravelle's sellout club appearances were laughing as hard as the women at songs like Seat Up, Seat Down and I Wanna Come Back As A Man. "When I do the "battle of the sexes" songs for a live audience," Lindy says, "it's instant identification. I discovered that what's personal with me is not really strictly personal," she goes on. "It's everybody's experience--I'm just voicing it."The same sense of intimate familiarity carries through on all of Lindy Gravelle's work. Her Spanish Rain CD communicates the remarkable scope and depth of Lindy's insights. From Wish You Were Here, the poignant lament of a couple living in the same house, yet feeling miles apart, through the smoky-blue, jazz-toned Fool's Lullaby, to a warm, somehow ironic country flavored tribute to a love that lasts, I Love My Dog. The tender, meditative title cut, an instrumental inspired by the music of Chopin coexists easily on the album with the rock-out The House, which Lindy credits to her Jerry Lee Lewis influences.The Change, Lindy's most recent CD release, signifies a change in her musical odyssey. It includes six new original compositions and seven timeless standards. Among the originals are the title cut The Change, an anthem to the middle aged female set, No Place Under the Sun Like Oregon, the beautiful tribute song to her native state, The Rub, an infectious groove song with a punch line ending, and two tender country ballads, The Sweetest Thing I Know and For As Long As I Live. And just to round things out, she's added a good ol' honky tonk drinking song, A Little All the Time. Well Dave Keller is trying to change that.Currently based in Montpelier, VT, Keller leads a blues trio and a six-piece soul band, as well as performing solo. He has paid his dues the old fashioned way -- spending over 1,000 nights singing and playing his heart out. At sweaty, dirt road bars. At swanky ski saloons. At huge summer festivals. At jam-packed dance clubs, city halls, college theaters, prison gymnasiums, and blues cruises. You name it. Chances are Keller has played there. And chances are those audiences still remember dancing like crazy to his deep soul singing, his gritty guitar licks, and his super-tight, super-funky band.When Keller moved to the Green Mountain state in 1993, he had already spent many years learning his trade. Growing up in Worcester, MA, he picked up guitar in his teens, before falling for the blues and starting his own band in 1988, covering songs by B.B. King, Otis Rush, and the Neville Brothers. On this album of the Slovenian label Pharmafabrik we find a collection of remixes of the track ‘Signia’ of Pure H, to which it is interesting to hear the differences in the various reworked versions of this track. ‘Signia’ was originally featured on the Anadonia album of Pure H. This album has become a very pleasurable and expressive recording. The interpretations have been approached from various different genres such as industrial noise, isolationist ambient, dub and drum ‘n bass with heavy basslines, percussion and guitar drones as reoccurring sounds. The influence of Bill Laswell is nevery very distant on this album to which artists such as Eraldo Bernocchi, P.C.M, Chris Wood, DJ Surgeon, Wodan, Richard Dunlap, Psychedelic Desert and KK Null have delivered contributions. Especially the contribution of P.C.M with it’s drum ‘n bass and idm style in the spirit of Mike Paradinas and Aphex Twin is convincing, as well as the dark industrial of DJ Surgeon and the great psychedelic soundscape of Psychedelic Desert. The last highlight is featured with the confronting piece of ambient noise by KK Null. On Signia we are dealing with a musical expression of truly renewing free minds.Pure H has chosen a number of interesting artists to remix the "Signia"- track. And despite its tribute-concept the album is a quite varied sound experience. The link between the main-part of the ten remixes is some heavy bass-lines, guitar-based drones and ultraslow heavy beats. Otherwise the "Signia"- track has been processed, broken and manipulated into expressive styles spanning from doomy industrial, black ambient, noise to tranquilizing ambience. Great moments come from artists such as P.C.M. delivering a dark-toned breakbeat-version subtitled "Blue waters turn black".
