Take two women who both teach chemistry at the local university, hand them each an acoustic guitar - maybe a conga or bass - mix vigorously and poof! The result is the sound of two worlds colliding: the amazing finger-style picking of Carol Lowell, with her folk roots and insightful lyrics, and the sexy, bluesy vocals of Kristen Black, who will lay down a funky rockin' groove and rewire your head for sound. Their eclectic collection of original songs features strong, weaving harmonies and sweet acoustic riffs. Not long after the pair began playing together, a local patron of the arts came forward insisting they create an album together. Kristen and Carol enthusiastically headed into Avalon Studio and put together their first collaborative effort: Postcards from Avalon. Though each has been performing as a solo artist for years and each has a solo CD to her credit, the opportunity to experiment as a duo in the music lab was irresistible. Postcards is a compilation of acoustic gems guaranteed to leave you wondering why oil and vinegar don't mix but taste so damned good together. $16.69 Return To Summer Lake is Steven's third recording. Special guest artists on the CD include Molly O'Brien, Nina Gerber, Debi Smith, SONiA of Disappear Fear, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Al Petteway & Bruce Molsky. Steven Bio:Billboard Magazine describes Steven Gellman's music as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time". As another reviewer aptly phrased it, Gellman's songs are "Kodak moments" from his life.He often performs in nursing homes and retirement communities, and even used a choir of senior citizens as backup on the track "Almeda at 90" from his album "Photobook". Dick Cerri, President of the World Folk Music Association says "Steve's natural ability on stage enables an audience to not only enjoy the songs ...
| | Patty Griffin 1000 Kisses CD (2002)
Postcards From Avalon songs
$7.99 1000 KISSES was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Patty Griffin's success is either a testament to the eclecticism of the American music-buying public or to the success of the soundtrack to the movie OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? 1000 KISSES isn't a great departure for the Boston singer-songwriter--she's still singing the kind of perfectly formed mini-stories that inhabited her debut album, 1996's LIVING WITH GHOSTS. The main difference here is the assurance with which she presents her material--it's spare, sparsely orchestrated, mostly just acoustic guitar and bass, with the accent on her world-weary ...
| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
Postcards From Avalon album
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards ...
| | Be Good Tanyas Chinatown CD (2003)
Postcards From Avalon CD music
$11.65 The homespun, slightly quirky approach that guided the Be Good Tanyas on Blue Horse permeates their enigmatically titled sophomore release too. If anything, these performances beckon the listener even more into the material, as a fiery hearth might draw strangers together on a cold night. The singing is raggedy and breathy, the instruments gently strummed or stroked; like whispered intimacies, these elements ...

Postcards From Avalon songs
$15.95 "Fickel's songs straddle the line between blues storytelling and crafty country picking. His songs are tender, poignant, occasionally melancholy, and even humorous....[His] voice is a mellifluous instrument, lilting, and clear." - The Herald-Times, (Bloomington, Ind.)Jason Fickel was born in Kansas and raised in western Colorado, steeped in the wide-open west: cowboys, rodeos, and country-and-western music. As he picked up the guitar and began singing, the first songs he learned were old-time country favorites.Bitten by the blues as a teenager, he headed south to Mississippi where he apprenticed himself to bluesman James "Son" Thomas, learning ...

| | Bill Bryant Drawn From Memory CD (2005)
Postcards From Avalon album
$18.95 I am a singer and songwriter from Iowa City, IA. I like songs that emphasize craftsmanship, lyrics, and melody, so that's the kind of songs I try to write. I don't like affectation in vocals or production, so I tried to present these songs straightforwardly, but with style nonetheless. Though each song stands on its own, the twelve are intended to hang together as a whole. The CD works best, I think, if you can listen to it from first to last in one sitting. . . that's the intended emotional and musical arc, anyway.Patrick Brickel produced all the tracks, and really found a way to capitalize on the diversity of styles found in the songs, but at the same time to capture the common elements that relate them one to another. What are those common elements? A certain vocabulary, I think, found in the lyrics, for sure, but also in the perspective and structure of the songs, and in the world they conjure up. What kind of world? One in which people struggle with their desires and their pasts, stave off regret, seek redemption, find love, come to terms. The characters who inhabit these songs strive to be humble, and brave, and kind, but know from experience it's no easy task. They need help; they need grace; they need forgiveness. ...
