When they say the word "eclectic" about Joyce Kouffman - composer, jazz drummer, classical guitarist, improvisational cellist, live concert producer, community music activist, and dedicated educator - they mean it. Joyce's music career has spanned from classical to jazz to studies in traditional drumming in Senegal, West Africa. She has lead and conducted all sizes of ensembles, written music for film, dance, and chamber music. After performing on drums with jazz legend Illinois Jacquet in a jazz residency Joyce produced at Harvard University, the band leader credited her project as having inspired him to lead a big band in the last 20 years of his life. About Joyce's jazz drumming, Illinois Jacquet wrote: "Boss of the Drums!"WHO HAS NOT BEEN TOUCHED is a Healing Jazz Journey that was written in close collaboration with SF Bay Area legend and co-artistic producer and co-composer Mary Watkins ( MaryWatkins. net). The instrumental songs are celebratory and poignant, energizing and gentle. They are performed with Joyce and pianist Mary Watkins by veteran masters of jazz, both winners of numerous Grammy's and platinum albums, saxophonist/composer Don Braden ( DonBraden ) and bassist Ruth Davies, formerly with the great blues artist, Charles Brown. ALL THINGS CENSORED VOL. 1 is a collection of Mumia Abu-Jamal's commentaries about racism, the death penalty, life on death row, the privations of the prison system and the corporate control of the media, among other issues. In addition to Mumia's socio-political commentary, there are segments from Alice Walker, Howard Zinn, Dorothy Allison, Cornel West, Ron Hampton, Joycelyn Elders, William Kunstler, Judi Barri, Assata Shakur and more.
In 1994, journalist and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal was hired by National Public Radio's All Things Considered as a special commentator, only to be fired shortly before his series began due to political pressure from police groups and Republican Senator Bob Dole. This set from the ultra-leftist Alternative Tentacles label compiles these essays, recorded by Abu-Jamal in prison just before the state of Pennsylvania banned any journalists from visiting death row, essentially ending any recorded correspondence from the former Philadelphia journalist, convicted of murdering a police officer in 1982. Aided by vocal support from folks like Dr. Joycelyn Elders; Martin Sheen; famed attorney William Kunstler; authors Howard Zinn, Manning Marable, and Alice Walker; activist Cornel West; and MOVE survivor Romana Africa, Abu-Jamal focuses not so much on his own imprisonment but on the failure of the prison system as a whole, "the war on the poor," and the ongoing story of Philadelphia's MOVE. Some essays are fleeting, underdeveloped ideas ("It's Not Nice to Fool With Mother Nature" is a pedestrian statement of eco-apocalypse). Kafele, trumpeter, composer and producer, has been playing the trumpet for over 18 years. The name Kafele (pronounced kuh-FAY-lay) is of Egyptian origin, and means 'worth dying for'. Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kafele was first exposed to jazz by his parents. In fact, he attributes his love and appreciation for the art to his father who often listened to recordings of John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis among others. Later, his brothers and sisters introduced him to Hip-Hop and R&B. As a byproduct of becoming a Chicago resident for about 7 years, Kafele was inundated with lively, upbeat house music. Silvano MonasteriosPianist-composer Silvano Monasterios was born in Caracas, Venezuela. After years of training at the Jose Angel Lamas Conservatory, he began his professional career at the age of 18, already having become experienced in a wide variety of musical genres by performing and recording with some of the most prominent Venezuelan artists.In 1989, he traveled to Miami, Florida to participate at the Miami Jazz Festival, where he received a 'Best Soloist Award'.
