| | Roderick Harper Essence Of... CD Roderick Harper Discography of CDs
Roderick Harper is a refreshing jazz vocalist who takes chances with familiar standards, jazz standards, and modern pop tunes on his eponymous, second CD as a leader. With trumpeter Nicholas Payton as producer (who also plays piano, bass, and drums on some tracks), Harper enjoys doing the unexpected. "Willow Weep for Me" almost seems played on autopilot on many recordings, but Harper devours Payton's bluesy chart, swooping all over the soulful setting. Harper delights in Payton's snappy arrangement of "Where or When" (with Payton overdubbing the entire rhythm section himself); he offers a swinging treatment of "Waltz for Debbie" that adds a number of musical twists (One minor quibble: Gene Lees, not Bill Evans, wrote its lyrics), and he also connects with his emotional interpretation of "Return to Paradise," an obscure movie theme written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington. Even Sade's "Love Is Stronger Than Pride," a normally unpromising AAA ballad, is reshaped by Payton's inventive arrangement, which features pianist Leandro Lopez to good effect, with harmony by Payton (on flugelhorn) and flautist Steve Eisen. Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden
RODERICK HARPERChicago Sun-Times writer Lloyd Sachs states that he is, "a smooth and serious singer." Baton Rouge Morning Advocate writer Rod Dreher calls him, "a very special talent." Jazztimes Magazine proclaims, "he is an able convert to jazz, when Jon Hendricks invited him on stage for a round of Thelonius Monk's 'Rhythmaning.'"Roderick is a native of Washington, D.C. He matriculated at Southern University and A & M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Political Science, while he minored in Jazz Studies under the tutelage of jazz clarinetist Alvin Batiste. In school, he formed and was part of numerous jazz groups. One of those groups was Alvin Batiste and the Jazzstranauts. This afforded him the opportunity to come to the attention of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis. With the recommendation of Batiste, Roderick was invited to sing with Marsalis anytime. This led him to land a featured spot in the Ellis Marsalis Quartet. Being under the experienced hand of Marsalis brought about many opportunities for Roderick to perform with the likes of Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Betty Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis, Joe Sample, Danny Barker, Kent Jordan, Mark Whitfield, Joe Lavano, Bobby Watson, Marcus Roberts, Cyrus Chestnut, Nicholas Payton, Wessel Anderson, James Carter, The Harper Brothers, Stephen Scott, Brian Blade, Max Roach, Terence Blanchard, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and many others.Roderick invites you to enjoy his sophomore project entitled, "The Essence Of... Roderick Harper." Grammy-Award Winning Jazz Trumpeter, Nicholas Payton, produced the project. The C.D. is a follow-up to his solo debut, "Beautiful Beginnings," produced by Delfeayo Marsalis.

Essence Of... album
$11.39 Andy Woodson is one of the most in-demand bassists in the central Ohio area, and has been a vital part of the Columbus music scene for over 15 years.Andy has performed and recorded (on electric and acoustic bass)with many local and nationally known musicians, including pianist DD Jackson, David Murry, Billy Hart, Kim Pensyl, Michael Cox, Hank Marr, Bobby Floyd, Mark Flugge, Christian Howes, Vince Andrews, Jim Snidero, Pete Mills, Donna Mogavero, and Paul Brown's Science Gravy Orchestra, to name but a few. As well as his work as a sideman, Andy also gigs and records his own music with the Andy Woodson Band. In 1997 he released his first CD, "Scioto", which features Andy's original jazz and jazz rock compositions, with heavy emphasis on his work with 6 string fretless bass."Fretted, fretless, acoustic- Woodson does it all on this collection of his lush, King Crimson- style compositions." -Gregory Isola, Bass Player Magazine, Indie City column, Oct. 1997MJBrady Published on: 11 Oct 2001 "On Scioto, we are hearing the endeavors of bassist Andy Woodard, both as a composer and performer, his bass playing skills are broad and varied, apparent in the styles of music that are present on this cd. He is supported by a long list of capable musicians, with practically a "new" line-up for each song, the music is mainly from a jazz foundation with certain songs bringing ample doses of progressive and fusion influences, these would prove to be the strongest songs on the cd for readers in this forum. Other songs bring a more tradional charted style of jazz, reminescent of Stan Getz, and early Miles Davis, though not as adventurous, these songs have a mellower vibe to them, offering laid back freestyled rhythms for the benefit of each players solo spots. Andy plays some very fluid upright bass, and when he shows his electric side he pays tribute to the greats(Jaco, Petrucci, Willis, etc) and shames no one. As his first cd, one can understand the want to express his multi-faceted musical tastes, yet the tunes are coming from opposite sides of the jazz realms and may seem to have some slow spots. My feelings are that Andy has made a statement as both a musician and composer ...

Essence Of... CD music
$17.09 THE AURATONESThe Dutch group The Auratones was founded in 1996 by guitarist Tjeerd van Zanen, saxophonist Rolf Delfos and bassplayer Boudewijn Lucas. They selected a number of very fine musicians who had worked with some of the best bands and artists in Holland and abroad, all jazz & funk orientated. It's an eight piece band: drums, percussion & bass, guitar & keys and three hornplayers. Also check the biography of the individual bandmembers on our site www.theauratones.com!The first CD "Funny Sounds", which was released 1997 through Red Bullet Records, flirted with "easy tune", a retro-style, hot and hip in the London disco's during those days. The hype disappeared, but The Auratones remained. Soon the direction in the music changed to funky souljazz, some of it with a latin flavour. It prooved an ideal combination of ...
