| | Damon Grant Sonidos Nuevos (New Sounds) CD Damon Grant Discography of CDs
As the Afro-Cuban music tree stretches ever higher and farther, its roots creep in all directions searching for new resources to grow, for new talent. Damon Grant represents a generation of players that may just be the wellspring of new ideas that the genre is looking for. The music on Sonidos Nuevos presents a truly unique perspective, at times ponderous, at others aggressive and funky. With plenty of creative compositional ideas flying around, including dark mysterious harmony and polyrhythmic fun, there's no mistake about the creative potential in this band of young jazzers. The question that will occasionally creep up is, "Where is Damon Grant?" Taking turns behind the congas and mallets, the two instruments that are consistently the hardest to hear, and almost never taking a solo on either, Grant seems a little shy of the spotlight. Similarly, the only occasions when the Latin time feels really come together is when they are in the hands of guests Horacio Hernández and Richie Flores, Grant's regular rhythm section seeming to limp a little with the highly idiomatic Afro-Cuban styles. Grant is certainly an artist to watch, though Sonidos Nuevos offers more promise for the future than it delivers today. ~ Evan C. | | Dan Kozar I Remember You CD (2004)
Sonidos Nuevos (New Sounds) CD music
$14.79 Scott Yanow, Cadence Magazine"Dan Kozar is an excellent solo guitarist whose techniqueis conventional; much closer to Joe Pass and Charlie Byrdthan to Stanley Jordan or Charlie Hunter. On this relaxed and melodic set, he performs 11 well-known standards. Kozar's interpretations are well played. I Remember You works wellas background music although guitarist will enjoylistening closely to the intricate voicings."Reg Schwager a jazz guitarist from Toronto, Ontario, Canadasays:"It sounds beautiful - lyrical, relaxed, sincere - what more could you want?" C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz"All of Me" and "Deed I Do" are bouncing delights, played with vigor and apparent joy. Mr. Kozar is obviously enjoying himself. "Summertime" is given perhaps the most technically complex reading, with Mr. Kozar coaxing out the darker themes of the Gershwin piece. The disc ends with a rolling "Days of Wine and Roses," providing a perfect end to a recording best listened to with the lights low and someone special near."John Gilbert, E Jazz News"It is one of tough task to play solo guitar and make it swing. Kozar is certainly a fine player, knows ...

$17.09 Back HomeThe Sturm BrothersRolf Sturm guitar and effectsHans Sturm double basswithGlen Velez percussion"Listening to the outside playing of guitarist Rolf Sturm, you'd never think that he'd once backed country feller Eddie Arnold. God knows what his former boss would think of the unpredictable, twisted writing and playing featured here. Maybe all those lessons he took with John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Jim Hall, and Joe Pass sucked the hillbilly out of him - though, as Frisell has done, you can picture the guitarist turning out some wonderfully demented album of wa-hoo, clogging-in-hell White trash music. Maybe next time. This time he, brother Hans and percussionist Velez lay out un paralleled ...
