| | Katy vs Evil Volume 1 CD Katy vs Evil Discography of CDs
The latest to come out of the musical Mecca that is Oberlin (Liz Phair, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Northern State), Katy vs Evil is an alternative pop rock band fronted by Katy Gunn, a classically trained violinist, vocalist, and former concert master of the Oberlin Conservatory Chamber Orchestra. Gunn's formidable, acrobatic voice, technical ability, and eclectic style - an amalgamation of electronic, pop, classical and rock - has drawn inevitable comparisons to fellow femmes Fiona Apple and Tori Amos, while subtly forging a vision uniquely her own.Katy vs Evil's debut album was produced by film composer and programmer, David Majzlin, who has worked with artists Lou Reed and Fernando Saunders. Simply titled Volume 1, the group's first release reflects on the precarious nature of love, the simplicity of humility, divine tales of sexual obsession, and the superheroes we sometimes need to be in order to escape the mundane, monotonous existence that threatens all of us.A writer who is anything but predictable, Gunn favors violin solos over guitars, hyper - kinetic breakbeats of Drum n Bass over anthemic rock, the cinematic drama of Trip Hop over the ballad, and the passions of the traditional Tango (which features renowned bandoneon virtuoso, Raul Juarena (Chesky Records). It's the kind of album you put on after a breakup, before being fired, and any time you feel the need to know where you've been, but are unclear as to where you need to go next. One might ask, if this is Katy, who is Evil? According to Gunn, Evil represents "façade - the illusion of the importance of superficiality and the false notion that perfection is the ultimate goal. I think that mistakes are what make people human - living and learning - not packaged ideas and computer programs...although I have to admit - a computer-animated version of Katy Gunn is underway as we speak..." | | Windham Hill Christmas II CD (2003)
Volume 1 songs
$6.09 Following in the footsteps of the previous collection, A Windham Hill Christmas, Vol. 2 gathers more relaxing, sophisticated holiday music as performed by Windham Hill's roster of artists. The collection finds the right balance between traditional and contemporary, both in terms of its sound and its choice of songs. Will Ackerman and David Cullen's "I Wonder as I Wander" sounds gently modern, while Paul McCandless' "In Dulci Jubilo" has a slightly more traditional bent. Tracy Silverman and Thea Suits' strings and flute interpretation of "Away in a Manger" mixes both approaches and is breathtaking in its lovely simplicity. Most of the performances here, including Barbara Higbie's "Patapan," suggest pristine snowscapes or, in the case of Jim Brickman's "The First Noel," the warmth of a hearth, but Steve Erquiaga's "Joy to the World" may be the first rendition of the carol that sounds downright sunny. Tracks by Richard Schönherz, Alex de Grassi, and Tim Story and George Winston's "Silver Bells" complete the album, ...

| | Poco Legend CD (1978)
Volume 1 music CDs
$6.59 Poco's biggest-selling album of all time also presented the biggest personnel change at one time for the then-decade-old group, whose lineup had hardly been a model of stability up to that time. Co-founding drummer/singer George Grantham and longtime bassist/singer Timothy B. Schmit were both gone, the latter off to the Eagles. Listening to parts of this album, one gets the sense that, with the arrival of Charlie Harrison (bass, harmony vocals) and Steve Chapman (drums) in the group, Poco was deliberately adopting a change in sound similar to what the Eagles went through when Joe Walsh joined, into much harder rocking territory, at least part of the time. Longtime fans were probably disheartened to hear Rusty Young and Paul Cotton give up any semblance of their country roots on the opening track, "Boomerang," a bracing, heavy rock number (for this band) that didn't sound a great deal like the Poco of previous years. Most of the rest of the album, however, was closer to what one wanted and expected from this band -- "Spellbound" a beautifully lyrical ballad that benefited from Young's instrumental range and his and Cotton's harmonizing, and Cotton's "Barbados" offering similarly alluring musical textures with more of a beat. Cotton's "Heart ...

Volume 1 music CDs
$10.29 Anything Box is four guys using guitars, noise and computers to create binary tripped-out, emotionally tinged elektrodelic (their word) pop music. The name comes from an obscure Sci-Fi short story from the 60's about a young girl who sees an idealized fantasy world when she cups her two hands. Anything Box began in the bedroom of lead singer/songwriter Claude ...
