An exploration of modern city life in a mythical context, Polis is an opera without words, where melodic themes are the characters that play out the drama amidst dark ambient environments and pulsating rhythmic latticework. In a sense, Polis follows the concept of program music, music that represents extra-musical ideas such as a picture or a story. The voice, so evocatively provided by Mariana Bernoski (This Side of North), is not utilized as a solo vocal line as in traditional songs, but rather as an instrument, blended with other electronic and acoustic instruments to create an organic whole. The story of Polis recounts a young woman's journey to a great city that is not from the present, past or future, but draws elements from all three. It exists in "mythical time," or a time that does not necessarily exist in our timeline here in the real world. Her visit is spurred on with the hope of finding a future and ultimately finding herself within the megalopolis. Upon entering the city at night, she is at first fearful of her new surroundings but soon the bright lights, constant bustle and magnificent grandeur seduce her and she becomes a part of the great mechanism driving the Polis. After many years, she comes to the crushing realization that instead of finding herself, she has lost her individuality within the mass of citizenry. She finally escapes the Polis and finds refuge in an old and long-abandoned lighthouse where she re-lights the flame far away from the glow of the city. Polis consists of three "acts," each beginning with an introductory piece of music called a "Quietude." The final quietude acts as an epilogue to the work. Charles B. Kim is a composer living in Los Angeles. He studied composition and computer music at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. Kim's first opera, "From Geneva to the Planet Mars" was premiered in a production from the Peabody Opera Studio in 1996. In 1999, he composed music for the official Times Square New Years Eve 2000 Celebration in New York City. Kim currently writes music and does musical sound design/programming for film, television, and video games as well as for his own solo releases. Polis album
$13.15 Múm's first album for Fat Cat -- by no coincidence, the label that also broke fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós -- has all the majestic synths, crackly drum machine percussion, sampled silence, and crystalline vocals you'd expect from the country that produced Björk and Sigur Rós, though with less focus on digital sound than the former and less reliance on drama than the latter. Múm is very interested in the music of sound, but Finally We Are No One never sounds like a difficult record; if it's not the instruments sounding naïve or folksy (in good ways), the lisping, childlike vocals are bound to prompt adjectives like adorable and precious. "Green Grass of Tunnel" has the sweet melancholia, coloring-book hip-hop, and slowly shifting chords of poptronica producers like isan or Boards of Canada, ...

Polis songs
$13.05 PLAY was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Bodyrock" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
"Natural Blues" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
The Limited Edition packaging of PLAY: THE B-SIDES includes new essays, photos and drawings from Moby.
A marked departure from the sound of his groundbreaking EVERYTHING IS WRONG and his subsequent hard-edged output, PLAY finds Moby charting new territory. Abandoning the breakneck drive of techno punk for looser, groovier structures entrenched in dance-oriented hip-hop brings a whole new feeling to Moby's vast and varied sonic canvas. Several songs, including the hit single "Honey," are distinguished by the appearance of early American field recordings, looped bits of African American spirituals and folk songs culled from the Alan Lomax catalogue.
Moby's penchant for complex composition is in evidence here, as layer after layer of keyboard ornamentation, percussive effects, guitar, vocals (Moby sings and also plays all the instruments), and pulsing, echoing beats create a rich, deeply textured tapestry. PLAY shows that Moby's sophisticated sense of sound collage hasn't dulled, and the combination of these wide-ranging sonic experiments with unique historical ...

Polis album
$13.15 "The new Jimpster album is in heavy rotation, with "Secret Sun" and "Distant Light" being my favorites at the moment. I love this guy's lush electronic-dub-house sound." - Jason Bentley, KCRW Los Angeles"Perfect in many ways" - Record Collector Amour provides a snapshot of where Freerange has ended up after a solid decade of musical milestones, with the man that started it all taking charge into decade number two. - BPM Magazine "future soul kingpin and bittersweet house don" - Ben Watt (Buzzin Fly, EBTG) Amour is Jimpster's 3rd official artist LP and his first since 2003's Domestic Science. Kajmere Sound is proud to partner with the UK label Freerange Recordings for the U.S. release of this future-classic. For Jimpster's (AKA Jamie Odell) debut LP on Freerange, he's chosen to push in a more home listening, song based direction which highlights his versatility as a producer. In Jamie's own words: "it's taken three years to finish, trying to create a real listening album rather than a collection of tracks. I wanted something that can really be enjoyed at home rather than just made for the dancefloor." From downtempo, instrumental hiphop grooves through to abstract minimal techno through to deep, clicky house and way beyond, this LP will reawaken even the most jaded of listeners. This could be because of Jamie's early decision to bring in featured vocalists to bring a different spin to his usual, instrumental styles. ...
| | Little Boots Hands CD (2009)
Polis CD music
$20.19 Debut album from Britain's new pop princess (aka 24 year old Blackpool native Victoria Hesketh). 12 tracks
A good year on from catching ears and sparking potentially damaging levels of next-big-thing hype with her first single, "Stuck on Repeat" -- a sleek, buzzy, self-fulfilling prophecy of "metaphor pop" with obvious debts to Kylie Minogue and Giorgio Moroder, and a writing/production assist from Hot Chip's Joe Goddard -- Little Boots (aka U.K. popstress Victoria Hesketh) finally showed her Hands. When it arrived, her full-length debut amply justified the hype even while slightly disappointing some of her faithful. It's true that only a handful of Hands' cuts can stack up against the stunning "Stuck" in terms of sonic distinctiveness and sheer hooky inevitability, and realistically, despite some clear mainstream potential, it's unlikely to achieve the sort of massive crossover success that some may have envisioned -- certainly not in America, where the album's street date was pushed back considerably beyond its June 2009 U.K. release. Frankly, Little Boots isn't doing anything especially musically innovative -- as she well knows -- and Hands fails to add any buzz-stoking specifics or publicity hooks to her persona beyond the already ...

$12.15 I never knew that it was possible to have a heart felt passion about something and not even realize it.
