Aimée Allen’s intimate connection with music began as a child. Her childhood was quite literally scored with classic jazz, because of her mother’s intense love of the music. The influence of the jazz tradition can be heard in Aimée’s musical style and interpretation choices. But Aimée’s listeners can also hear her individual voice, nuanced and sparkling with soul and sensuality. Singing came early for Aimée. But she first began to sing professionally as a college student. At Yale University Aimée was an active member and soloist with two a cappella singing groups performing a jazz repertoire. After graduation, Aimée lived in Paris and performed regularly in clubs and at music festivals. There, her understanding of the place of jazz in the world deepened and her interpretive style began to flourish. The intense relationship between the francophone audience in Paris and Brazilian bossa nova, long one of Aimée’s musical loves, led Aimée to form a group dedicated to bossa and jazz: Les Bossa Novices. Aimée performed frequently in and outside of Paris with Les Bossa Novices. As part of New York’s jazz community for the past few years, Aimée has continued to navigate traditional and modern jazz, infusing her craft with a personal and intimate style. In addition to selections from the great American songbook, Aimée sings some not-so-standards, pays homage to Brazilian bossa, and frequently includes a French lyric. Her touch is always sincere and her sound authentic. Her singular voice and soul has garnered the love of many of the city’s best young musicians. On Dream, Aimée is joined by pianists Dave Cook and Toru Dodo. Dave brings a thoughtful and innovative attention to rhythm as well as rich, original arrangements. Toru accompanies with his classic lush style and a modern soulfulness. Ben Campbell joins with great musicality on bass, and Brian Woodruff plays drums with characteristic panache, great sensitivity, and imagination. Aimée is also joined in a duo by the inspired guitarist Richard Padron. Please visit Aimée's website at www.aimeeallenmusic.com for more. Aimee Allen Dream Songs | 1. | My Favorite Things |

$9.85 Twice As Nice, the new CD from Karla Harris and Tom Kennedy, is really two great stories … ~It’s a tribute to some of the most memorable melodies and lyrics ever written -- songs from seven legendary composers of the great jazz and pop standards, with two classic tunes from each.~It’s also about the collaboration of two artists who share a deep appreciation for this music and a love for performing it.Those artists, internationally acclaimed jazz bassist Tom Kennedy and popular vocalist Karla Harris, met in 2004. Tom was off the road and back in his native St. Louis, playing a gig in the city’s celebrated Forest Park one evening when he met Karla, also on the engagement.Well-regarded locally, Karla had recently re-entered the jazz scene after several years away. Hearing her sing standards such as Good Morning Heartache and Moonglow that night, Tom recalls being impressed by a “refreshing lyricism and deep spirit emanating from the vocal mic.” Karla, for her part, knew of Tom’s reputation as “one of the best bass players on the planet," amazing on both the acoustic and electric bass. A first-call musician, Tom has worked with jazz greats such as James Moody, Freddie Hubbard, David Sanborn, Stan Kenton, Patti Austin, Maureen McGovern and Rosemary Clooney. As an integral part of the Dave Weckl Band, with whom he writes, records and tours, his fans are worldwide. LA Weekly writes that Tom's work is "nothing short of inspiring" and Downbeat Magazine calls him a "true virtuoso." When Tom suggested Karla take part in a CD project he’d been planning, it was the right opportunity at the right time. Their musical rapport and shared vision for performing this music is evident in each track. Twice As Nice glides between jazz and sophisticated pop standards in a rich collection that includes works from composers such as Richard Rodgers, ...

Dream
$14.69 Music is something that should make you feel good. It has the power to transform one’s mood from gloomy to feelings of jubilation. Music always has been for me an outlet to express what I couldn’t sometimes say with words. Music has been a means to scream when I couldn’t, to laugh out-loud, and to cry without anyone knowing my pain. I started out as a youngster playing the trumpet and performing in the school choir. I wasn’t a very good trumpet player and surely not a talented vocalist. Yet, that didn’t stop me from enjoying the thrill of performing. In the final weeks of 8th grade at Washington Polytechnic Academy something happened that almost never happens at a public school, two new instruments arrived. One was an alto saxophone and the other? You guessed it a tenor saxophone. The alto did nothing for me but that tenor? Well, it was almost as big as me—a then 6’0” awkward 13-year-old. I begged my teacher, Mr. Wingfield, the rest of the year to let me take it home for the summer. After much pestering, he agreed. When I played that tenor, something happened that had never before when it came to me and music. We connected and I sounded good! My passion came to life as forgotten memories of hearing the saxophone resurfaced. It became impossible for me to watch TV or a movie without hearing that haunting sound of a saxophone. That summer I took lessons at the neighborhood youth center, Bidwell, and studied under talented pianist, Dr. Leonard Johnson, (who would later join my band). The summer ended and off I went to high school (Schenley High). There I met a friend and brother, Mr. Todd Preston. He doubled as my band teacher by day and professional saxophonist by night. The next 2 years we spent what seemed like every waking moment together. He helped me learn the saxophone, and I helped him get reactivated as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mr. Preston let me play with his band at The Historic Balcony in Shadyside. I fondly remember warming up on the back steps of the Balcony then coming on stage and joining such Pittsburgh “greats” as Don Aliquo Jr., Eric DeFade, Dave Budway and many more. Mr. Preston ...
