ROB STERLING Just when you thought it's all been done, Rob Sterling makes a refreshing statement. His songs move forward in the same way all the greatest rock artists have done - with vision and style. Rob Sterling is a new mainstream alt-rock artist from Toronto whose sound is defined by catchy, hard-hitting rock grooves with a strong melodic sensibility and powerful live performances that invoke the urgency of a runaway freight train. Style: “Beer, Glamour and Bombast”. His moody, atmospheric songs glorify the classic sounds of searing electric guitar and energize the listener with stirring and intense vocals. His knack of reinventing himself musically by combining styles and influences gives each of his songs a catchy and unique flavour.Originally from Toronto, Sterling started rock music at an early age, singing in a Junior High School rock band. By thirteen, he was a drummer in Teenage Kicks, a novelty band that received generous media attention in Toronto as the youngest rock ‘n roll band ever. Once finished high-school, he spent a year at Humber College in Toronto for jazz bass and the jazz influence can be found these days in his guitar work. While in India in 1999, he played bass in Silk Route, the country’s most successful Hindi-Pop band but as soon as he was back on Canadian soil in 2000, he set out to make a name for himself on home turf.Recently, he has become a member of the Canadian songwriting association, SOCAN. Currently he is working on fresh recordings in his new digital studio. These new demos will fuel his new live band VIRAL SPIRAL and will be featured on the forthcoming release tentatively titled QUARAN-TEEN. Some autobiographical information: "Born in Detroit, and I've been making noise since I was 9 years old. Started with an OLD record player in the basement, listening to my parents 78s and 45s, of dixieland and the crooners of the day. The first record I ever owned was Tutti-Frutti. Raw, youthful abandonment and I was so young the lyrics made me laugh my ass off. Great fun. Then the theme song from "Peter Gunn" introduced me to the sensual powers of music. Then "The Warmth of The Sun" and "I'll Follow The Sun" showed me the warmth (no pun intended) and beauty. I learned to play everything I could get my hands, fingers, mouth on. Wanted to be a morph of John, Paul and Brian Wilson rolled into one person. Then I got my hands on a cassette recorder which turned into two cassettes so I could "multi-track". Then a 4-track Teac. Always in bands, sometimes 2 or 3 at a time. Ended up in Ohio in a band called Wild Cherry. Reached critical mass with "Play That Funky Music", and the attendant Grammy nods, and gold and platinum spray-painted wall hangings. It was quick. (Better to have been there once than not at all!) Worked as NYC session musician for a number of years. Tried on a few different hats, including way too much computer stuff, but cannot stop making music. Now I just turn on a couple of computers, plug in a microphone and play.
