If you've heard famous Texas Tenors such as Arnett Cobb, Don Wilkerson, Wilton Felder and David "Fathead" Newman then you've heard this organ trio which backed them up on many performances in the eighties. They toured with Arnett Cobb in Texas, nationally, and in Europe, and were known as "Cobb's Mob" during this time. They were also featured on such albums as the Fantasy Records release "Showtime," backing both Arnett Cobb and Dizzy Gillespie. The chefs for this Texas home cooking are Clayton Dyess on guitar, Mike Lefebvre on drums and Kenny Andrews playing the authentic, old-fashioned Hammond B3. Even without a Texas Tenor great upfront, this trio cooks up a variety of tasty musical treats, including such standards as April In Paris, done just "one more time," C Jam Blues, Am I Blue and Bag's Groove. When you hear the range of moods from bluesy to uptempo to Latin and everything in between, it's easy to see why these three musicians were perennial favorites with the Texas saxophone greats. The down-home sound they produce is no mere imitation but the authentic, full-flavored organ trio sound. Kenny Andrew's Hammond B3 organ , coupled with the rotating Leslie speaker system, gives the original totally funky jazz organ sound that has been widely imitated but rarely duplicated. Clayton Dyess plays his Gibson Howard Robertstm model guitar, a prized original instrument, in his own style, with echoes of guitar greats such as Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. Mike Lefebvre is the master of organ trio style, laying down the perfect beat for each song. Yes, this CD is surely authentic Texas down-home cooking, all the more so because it was done literally in a kitchen! The recording was done at Kenny Andrews' house with the Leslie speakers located in his kitchen! The rest of the instruments weren't that close to the flame, but for stereo separation the Leslie speaker unit was put in the kitchen, giving rise to the title for this CD. (This placement was also probably historically appropriate, since Mr. Hammond and Mr. Leslie apparently never got along, although their systems were always used together. )So as you listen to each number, whether it's the up tempo chaser Broadway, the bluesy original K Ray Blues or the latin-tinged Eclypso, think of them as part of a home-cooked meal, each one unique and different, but all from the flavors of the Texas Tenor tradition. Leslie's In The Kitchen music CDs
$12.69 John D'earth, Members of Old School Freight Train, Agents of Good Roots, Modern Groove Syndicate, and Fair Weather Bums join Charlottesville based drummer James McLaughlin to create this unique instrumental jazz album. This project was mixed and mastered by Chapman Stick master Greg Howard in May, 2005 and released on Mountainside Records."The first disk I stumbled upon is a magical offering I feel privileged to be one of the first to hear. Sesshin is pure down-tempo ecstasy. Produced entirely by James McLaughlin at his Mountainside Studios, Sesshin is the best takes from endless jam sessions there. While Sesshin is smooth, and it is jazz, I hesitate to call it "smooth jazz," the overproduced, reverb-heavy, synthetic drumming garbage played late at night on most public radio stations. Sesshin is smooth in the classic, dark-speakeasy, cigarette-in-mouth, too-cool-for-school way. McLaughlin plays the drums, laying down the backbeat for some of the town's finest youngsters and veterans. Jesse Harper (guitar), Darrell Muller (bass), and Daniel Clarke (keyboards) are the backbone. Guests include JC Kuhl on sax and John D'earth on trumpet. Special kudos to Andy Thacker, who shows how to work a mandolin into the music the one and only way it should be done. Sesshin is a one-time offering showcasing the wide range of Charlottesville's musical talent. They have a gig scheduled for next month at the Gravity Lounge. I suggest that you do not miss the show."Damani Harrison, The Hook, 6.30. 05McLaughlin's all star Sesshin spans musical genresBy Jedd FerrisDaily Progress correspondentFriday, July 8, 2005Since moving to town three years ago, local drummer, producer and engineer James McLaughlin has had a chance to play with some of Charlottesville's best musicians, so earlier this year, he decided to get them all under one roof to record a super jam session. Enlisting a who's who from a wide range of genres from traditional jazz to bluegrass to roots rock to funk, McLaughlin opened his Mountain Records studio to create "Sesshin," a new album that ...
