The Music of Fuzz Noir has something to do with images. That is, when listening to it, associative thoughts start to develop, which a lot of times manifest themselves as images, pictures of landscapes, people, coming into existance in the mind´s eye.Try to imagine a score, where voices are not just oriented at the coordinate plane of pitch and meter, but depending on meaning and intensity of playing, bulge into depth or constrict, creating “space-time”. With gravitation fields, magnetic fields, potatoe fields, football fields, oil fields, battlefields, mine fields etc.The Music of Fuzz Noir reflecting reality becomes the concave mirror, it gets to the point occasionally exploding. Indeed, the rhythmic structures are complex and forms are boldly disposed but on an emotional level things are roughed up. The design of the compositions allows space for advancements during realization, personality and function of each musician are equal with all difference in character. They deliberately react to oneanother leading musical conversations of the highest level. Founded in 2004 „Fuzz Noir“, that is Raphael Preuschl (bass), Peter Rom (guit), Michael Prowaznik (drums) and Wolfgang Schiftner (sax), released the Debut-CD „Uarrgh2“ on JazzWerkstatt-Records. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. With the recording of NEXT ALBUM in July of 1972, the tenor giant returned to the jazz scene refreshed and recharged by the last of his extended spiritual sabbaticals. Never again would this great improviser turn his back on an adoring public, but such was the intensity of their love that henceforth every nuance of his playing was subjected to the most thorough scrutiny imaginable, and made to stand comparison with the Sonny Rollins of the late '50s and mid-60s.
NEXT ALBUM is a joyous recital, and the saxophonist performs with renewed power and conviction. "Playin' In The Yard" opens with an earthy concoction of calypso and R&B elements, goosed along by the electric rhythm cushion of pianist George Cables and bassist Bob Cranshaw, as drummer Jack DeJohnette offers up his distinctively jazzy variations on a contemporary backbeat. On "Poincinana," Rollins explores the classic ballad's lush changes on a curved soprano saxophone, with its distinctive tone and quirky intonation, while Cables and drummer David Lee engage in a freewheeling dialogue underneath.
