Wildly popular in its native Australia, the alternative-rock trio Eskimo Joe made its first attempt at an international breakthrough with BLACK FINGERNAILS, RED WINE, released in the United States during 2007. Like a more guitar-oriented Keane, the group, led by plaintive-voiced frontman Kavyen Temperley, excels at moody, ornate songs, as exemplified by the chiming "New York" and the tense, driving title track.
"If the first album was about the honeymoon and the second was about the break-up, then this one is for the troubled mind". Stuart macleod - eskimo joe "black fingernails, red wine' is truly eskimo joe's cock rock moment." Stuart macleod on the album's first single and title track. | Black Fingernails, Red Wine Music Black Fingernails, Red Wine Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) BRING ON THE NATION !!!! Observe this band with great awe because although my interests arnt really into this type of punk/alternate rock, my heart goes out to the AUSTRALIAN band, for reasons being that their popularity doesnt reflect there sheer brilliance.... A good music listener can respect bands outside of there usual listening quota, furthermore point out the pro's rather than the con's even if they are overwhelmingly outweighed..... Now, to JOE... i believe this band should be considered by all rock music listners because the music they play is consistantly good throughout all there albums with great vocals and mainstream -style guitar riffs .... Listen out for newly upcoming album.... PEACE OUT Submitted by jamessegelov (sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Brilliant Simply put, this is an incredible effort from Eskimo Joe, whose fans will be hard pushed to see anything of the grungy punk style that the boys from Perth used to employ. The flashes of brilliance displayed in earlier tracks such as "From the Sea" show in every track on this CD. Buy it and you'll probably run out of superlatives to describe it Submitted by mysteriousvoi20 (Brisbane, QLD, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Yet another 5-star effort... 'Black Fingernails. Red Wine' is just another way to further prove that Eskimo Joe are a very versatile band. moving away from the more mellow melodies of 'A Song Is A City', Black Fingernails proves to all listeners that Eskimo Joe are more than meets the eyes - in all genres they try their hands at. Five Stars. Submitted by Cas (Sebastopol, Victoria, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Eskimo Joe Album Released I've never been a fan of Eskimo Joe, before now. These guys have matured in their music style and lyrical format. This is a wonderfully unique and well portrayed album, and I can say it is one of the best that I own. For fans of the band, get the album, you will not be disappointed, the band has really grown and expanded in the best possible way. For those like me who never really got into the "eskimo joe" scene, try it out, like me, you might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Black Fingernails, Red Wine
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

Black Fingernails, Red Wine
$8.39 White Mice seemed to get more explicitly metal with each release over the years, so perhaps no surprise that they ended up with an album on the 20 Buck Spin label in 2009 -- and less of a surprise that it was an explosive, angry and righteous mess. With offensive song titles that redefine the idea of a lethal pun -- samples include "Placenta the Crotchtower" and "The Shroud of Urine" -- it's little surprise that Ganjahovadose is out to find some way to shock, but at the same time there's a sense of ridiculous humor clearly at work here too. Perhaps it's not surprising in a time where sonic ugliness in and of itself is simply not an intrinsic signifier of potential ...

| | steve lewandowski Familiar Melodies CD (2009)
Black Fingernails, Red Wine
$10.09 The golden age of jazz and American popular song converged in the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. Then, and for many years afterward, great musicians reworked the Great American Songbook. Today’s jazz players are braver. More and more of them avoid improvising on both yesterday’s hits, overexposed in elevators and dentist’s offices, and, for aesthetic reasons, today’s pop pap. “Familiar Melodies” is an ideal example of worthwhile original music, imagined by Milwaukee jazz guitarist, Steve Lewandowski. A prominent presence on his town’s club scene, Lewandowski has composed and arranged for his own trio and the Paul Spencer Band, house combo at Caroline’s, a longtime Milwaukee jazz home. Lewandowski also is a degreed teacher and first-called guitarist when touring Broadway shows drop into Wisconsin. But playing jazz has been his main professional love since boyhood. As his interest in the music ripened, the progression into composing and arranging was natural, and polished over time. “Familiar Melodies” successfully treads the fine line between being derivative and too far out. The CD’s level of musicianship is high. To interpret his melodies, the leader uses, mainly, a 1963 Gibson Super 400 and has recruited some of the upper Midwest’s best jazz musicians. Foremost is clarinetist Chuck Hedges, who’s had many CDs as leader and been a sideman on countless others. In a half-century-plus career, Hedges has performed worldwide with some of swing’s best players. For years, Wisconsin’s finest reed player’s, jazz and classical, have dropped in on Hedges’ performances for aural lessons. Neither Lewandowski nor vibes player Bob Maynard, the other two major soloists on this CD, are as widely known. But they hold their own with Hedges here and in their appearances together, often at Elm Grove’s jazz hub, the Grove. Hedges lured Maynard out of a two-decade retirement and helped lift Bob’s lightning mallet work to new levels. Maynard and Lewandowski divide leadership of a trio, backed by veteran bassist George Welland. Few Wisconsin musicians neither know more tunes in more keys than Welland nor have backed more touring stars. Lewandowski grew up in the Milwaukee area, marveling over local jazz guitar legends Don Momblow and George Pritchett. When keyboard wizard Frank DeMiles added Lewandowski to his roster of jazz students, Steve returned the favor as DeMiles’ student teacher. ...
