It must be fun to have great chops, master numerous musical idioms and on top of it, sing-all at the same. Stories, if it were a book, would be found in every section of the library at eye level because it would be easy reading and a certain best seller. Of Woody Mann, John Fahey says, "I've never heard a more creative, or more musical sounding guitarist." From page one on, Woody's solo CD is a ubiquitous showcase for his talent as a writer, guitarist and vocalist. Heading East is a vibrant flash of sound exemplifying Woody's mastery of the guitar, followed later by Lisboa, which is simply beautiful in a down home swaying 3/4 which makes you think of home, your lover, and the reason you listen to music. It is one of those songs you may not be able to hum by memory, but when you hear it again, it is as if you are in the song, there, nestled between the lines. It just makes you feel good. Stories is indeed a tale-notes becoming sentences, phrases becoming chapters and songs as integrated as familiar characters. Woody's influences are well noted as a young disciple of Reverend Gary Davis and Lennie Trestano. But if they all of the same generation, Woody would have been a peer, true to the emotional side of music they exuded, playing from the soul, bridging divides in genres, cover to cover. The Lieber and Stroller tune, I've Been Framed is great dialogue between Woody and his o wn subtext, "I told you so", guitar. While the lyrics "I always seem to get the blame" are not the plot of Stories, it serves as the perfect postscript, with Woody saying in effect, "This is my story and I'm sticking to it." JEFFREY MEYER
Recorded at Mixolydian Studio, Boonton, New Jersey. Includes liner notes by John Fahey.
Solo performer: Woody Mann (vocals, guitar).Living Blues (1-2/95, p.104) - "...He is...an honest, effective vocalist and a writer of thoughtful and often witty songs. In its own way, this disc is reminiscent of Abu Talib's recent updated take on the Delta blues. Even purists should give this enjoyable set a try." When Stevie Ray Vaughan's helicopter crashed in August 1990, the world lost more than just a musical giant. Stevie Ray's short life contained all the elements of a hero's journey--from obscurity, through adversity, to glory. His meteoric rise in the public's eye began after a stellar performance at the 1982 Montreaux Jazz Festival, which led to a gig with David Bowie (on LET'S DANCE) and a demo that ended up becoming TEXAS FLOOD, an outstanding debut from one of the most influential blues artists ever to call Texas home.

1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't until this recording that he'd had the opportunity to truly stretch out in the studio and show off his awesome soloing skills. Clapton's ...
| | Chris Bergson Another Day CD (2005)
Stories music CDs
$18.99 'Bergson's enthusiasm pours forth with a message that ranges from James Brown to James Taylor. Funk, soul, blues, folk and delectable jazz come together seamlessly.' - Jim Santella, All About Jazz 'On Another Day, Chris Bergson makes his thin-line Gibson sound fat and funky in true Big Easy style, pays tribute to Curtis Mayfield with sweet double-stops, and picks angular blues-bop lines like a tightly wound New York hipster. Bergson has tone and vibe to spare. ' - Andy Ellis, Guitar Player'Bergson's vocals are warm and personal. 'Come and Gone' simmers; gorgeous ballads 'Another Day' and 'High Above the Morning' are deep country soul. ' - Tom Hyslop, Blues Revue 'Bergson is accompanied by a stellar band whose musical acumen provides the perfect foil for Bergson's deeply soulful baritone vocals and dynamic fretwork! which melds the influences of Wes Montgomery and T-Bone Walker to perfection. A hugely talented artist. ' - Mick Rainsford, Blues in Britain"Versatile, inspired playing, with vocals to match." - Sean McDevitt, Guitar One Drawing on the rich legacy of American Roots music, the Chris Bergson Band's new CD Another Day (2 Shirts Records) stretches Delta blues and Memphis soul and into new forms. The Chris Bergson Band keeps the space and big beat of the Delta blues at its core while encompassing a variety of musical styles. The Chris Bergson Band features Jay Collins on tenor sax and backing vocals, Matt Wilson on drums, Chris Berger on acoustic bass, and Chris Bergson on guitar and lead vocals; it is their "highly personalized blend of blues, jazz and soul that makes Another Day such an outstanding set," (Blues in Britain). The band was able to shape and develop the music on Another Day over the course of their longstanding residency at New York City's Jazz Standard in 2004. In October, 2005 the Chris Bergson Band returned to Jazz Standard to celebrate the release of Another Day. This recording has all the soulful exuberance of the Chris Bergson Band's live shows - the heartbreakingly soulful and harmonically masterful tenor sax of Jay Collins, the dynamic and powerful drumming of Matt Wilson, and the warmth and big beat of Chris Berger's bass. In the center of the bandstand stands Chris Bergson, soaked in sweat, eyes closed, singing for all it's worth, his vocals punctuated by his wailing guitar. The immediacy and emotional power that the Chris Bergson Band brings to every live show is captured on Another Day, which was recorded ...
