| | Clinton Gregory Freeborn Man CD (1991)
Tell The World songs
$17.75 Gregory kicks a bit harder, as displayed on the hit "Play Ruby Play," but he still leans more on honky tonk than country-rock. ~ Michael McCall
Born in Martinville, Virginia, Clinton Gregory came from a long line of fiddle players. He picked up the fiddle at five years old, making his performing debut at bluegrass festivals within a year. He came to Nashville at age 12, where his father was playing at the Grand Ole Opry. Encouraged by his greatest influence in his life, his father, Willie Gregory, a fourth generation fiddle player who died in 1992, Gregory says of his father, 'He taught me to learn fiddle tunes as close to the way they were originally written, some 200 years ago. My father was my greatest influence.'Throughout his youth, Clinton found little else but the fiddle kept him on the straight and narrow. The last time Clinton and his dad appeared together was an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. 'Now that's a memory that'll stir the soul and hold you, and never, ever let you go', says Clinton. Once in Nashville, he was quickly hired as fiddle player for Dennis Robbins, the McCarters and Suzy Bogguss, often winding up on the road for more than 200 days a year, something he still does, and loves to do. In 1990 Step One Records signed him to their label. His first debut, a heart-tugging ...

Tell The World music CDs
$10.15 Dina D'Alessandro's promising debut effort showcases her strong, immediately catchy way around a very specifically '80s-inspired pop/rock, though not in the obvious or fashion cliché sense one would expect from that description. Rather than aiming for new romantic visions or AOR sludge, D'Alessandro embraces a bright, guitar-driven sound that would have been called college rock two decades back -- the difference being that her singing and lyrics are far more direct than, say, Michael Stipe's in 1983. Her work and that of her ...
| | Epiphany Project CD (2001)
Tell The World songs
$12.55 Principally recorded at Melody Vision and Morning Star Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Composer John Hodian and singer Bet Williams' Epiphany Project uses piano-based new age musical textures to underlie ethereal, folkish vocals. Williams' soprano singing is reminiscent of Sandy Denny (and thus of her disciple Natalie Merchant) as well as Kate Bush (and thus of her disciple Tori Amos) when it isn't recalling Ladies of the Canyon-era Joni Mitchell. But Hodian's music is moody, with loose structures more suggestive of new age than folk, and Williams' lyrics tend to be either too allusive to admit to specific meanings or too specific to be really evocative. In the latter category is the morbid "Lockerbie," which concerns the airline disaster that happened above that Scottish village but has nothing new to say about it, while among the former are "Gone" and "Jealousy," brief lyrics that are more collections of images and impressions than anything that communicates clearly to a listener. There are also instrumentals and songs in foreign languages -- "Tubwahun" renders the Beatitudes into Aramaic, and "Goth" draws from the Latin Mass with dozens of overdubs that make it sound like a selection performed by a boys' choir. Listeners may also be reminded of Enya on occasion, though Hodian and Williams are after a mood far more somber. (The album contains a 15th hidden track, "Waltz of the Wind," that sounds even more like Kate Bush than what has gone before.) ~ William Ruhlmann
A leading composer for documentary films and one of the rising breed of genre-stretching folk-pop singers are now collaborating as Epiphany Projects, and the result is a breathtaking new sound somewhere between avant-garde-folk and pop-art music. On their first nationally released recording, Epiphany Project creates music that transcends boundaries, but remains accessible. Pianist John Hodian and singer Bet Williams have pushed the folk envelope into a completely new shape ...
