Alysha Brooke has been performing on stage since she was three years old. By the age of nine she had been dancing for six years and acting for three, and had begun taking singing lessons. In that same year, her family decided to move to a rural 10-acre home on the outskirts of town. This move to the country would prove to set the stage for all that was to follow. As the second youngest in a family of seven daughters (and currently an aunt 14 times over), there was never a quiet moment in Alysha's house. But Alysha took to her new surroundings with a great curiosity. What better place for a nine-year-old girl to grow up?Clearly this was a home that was always full of stories and inspiration. In the summer after 11th grade, Alysha chose singing over dance and began recording her first CD. Whether or not it was her new country upbringing, or her older sister's love for country music, Alysha can't be sure, but a country music singer was what she was destined to be. Vocally, Alysha possesses a pure and rich quality, with a touch of vibrato and a soulful, bluesy feel. At the same time, her music projects an energy and personality that makes for a unique, alluring and upbeat performance. It was an experience of overwhelming splendour, of powerful, emotional colours as well as of penetrating recitatives in oeuvres full of glowing rhythm nobody could ignore. At once I included some of your tangos in my soloist program. You achieved things in music that – at their time – J. Strauß achieved with waltzes and polkas, and F.Chopin with polonaises, waltzes and mazurkas. You raised the tango from the ballroom to the concert stage! And now they are not only danced but also listened to. They are no longer for legs only but also for ears.In the summer of 1992, when I learned about your death at a festival in Finland, I – your admirer for long years – suddenly remembered: “He, as the only one, played his own compositions! However, this excellent music deserves to be played more often, and that in the biggest concert halls and by the best musicians!” And in Sept. 1993 the first concert of my quintet “Studio Piazolla” took place in the little hall of the Moscow Conseratory: “Argentinian Tangos by Astor Piazolla”. The world of your tangos is full of vivacity and passion; You entrusted the most secret sides of the human soul to the Bandoneon. Your easily remembered melodies which are based on smooth and powerful Latin-American rhythms, carry the listeners off to the secrets of man's nature: from pure love to passion that consumes and despises everything. In your oeuvres we also find the topic of solitude and grief: Soledad, Oblivion, Milonga del Angel, Muerte del Angel, Adios Nonino. Hello Folks, Here are a few words about my album Poolside Phone that you have come across here on CD Baby. This album was recorded in El Cerrito, CA in the fall of 1998 at my buddy Bennett Bowman’s studio. Bennett recorded and engineered the thing, and he and I produced and played the majority of the instruments on it. We had a lot of fun making Poolside Phone, and lots of the songs on it are my favorites, and I continue to perform these songs at live shows.Comments about the songs:The album kicks off with “You’ll Be The First To Know”, a spiteful sour grapes anthem. I already had the list of ridiculous examples of how people achieve fame and renown, but the song didn’t have a cohesiveness. Then, in a bar one afternoon on Clement Street in San Francisco, I was scribbling some lyrics in a small note pad about a guy who’s bitter about being dumped by a girl. And it worked to put the two half songs together. By the way, it irritates me when I hear people pronounce the word “niche” as if it rhymes with “leash”. We’re not French! It rhymes with “rich”, dammit.Next, the song “Evel Knievel” came about in a somewhat unlikely manner. While I was back at college studying US History, a class I was in was looking at a land disagreement in the Pacific Northwest between the US and Canada during the 1800’s. Not surprisingly my mind wandered. Suddenly my ears pricked up. One of the proposed boundaries was the Snake River Canyon. It jarred a memory of a Saturday afternoon when I was ten years old. My brother and I were watching ABC’s Wide World of Sports with horror and fascination as Evel Knievel made a highly publicized and ill-fated attempt to jump over the Snake River Canyon. I wrote the song from memory in my apartment on Larkin Street. Afterwards I checked some newspaper accounts of the spectacle on microfilm at the SF Public Library, just to get the date right.Recording this one, I found a guy to play Double Bass at the SF Music Conservatory, who plays on several other tracks as well. We were just going to have his Bass on during the chorus parts, so he was just fooling around during the other parts. We ended up using his whole part.
