$13.15 See why the Rolling Stones have been playing the Prima Donna's version of 'Can't Always Get...' on their latest tour!!John Dickie (Cameo Blues Band, John and the Sisters, The Mississippi Hippies, Mondo Combo, Q 107 blues radio host) fronts this band of great players and bent characters. Michael (the idea man) Sloski (Bruce Cockburn, Anderson/Sloski, Prairie Oyster, The Dexters) powers the rhythm section on drums, with his incredible feel and twisted flare for the unusual and forgotten.. Russ Boswell ( David Wilcox,Folk Alarm,Cory Hart, ...) plays mainly acoustic bass and drives the jump rhythm and helps set these unique grooves. Norm Brown (Mondo Combo, Mississippi Hippies) lays down some smokin' boogie in Roll em Pete and turns the 'Roogalator' on for a N'Orleans/Dr John version of the Beatles You Can't Do That. The horn section is Chris Mitchell on sax who lays down some burning solos and Gord Myers on Trombone. The horn lines are always creative and frequently hilarious. Two guests sit in with the boys on some of the tracks. Toronto Blues guitar legend Fred Keeler, (David Clayton Thomas and the Shays) plays his famous guitar styling that has influenced Toronto guitarists from Robbie Robertson (The Band) and Domenic Troiano (Mandala). Rob Gusevs (2B3, The Sisters Euclid) fills out the sound with some tasty Hammond B3 playing. An all-star band of 8 Toronto music veterans breathe new life into 12 Rock, and Rock n Roll classics on their debut release My Regeneration. You've never heard versions of You Can't Always Get What You Want (Stones), A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum) and Rock n Roll (Led Zeppelin) played like this. These clever arrangements mix Jump Blues and Ska, with Rock n Roll and swing. Whatever you want to call ...

| | Meghan Cary Onion Dream CD (2001)
Medium Cool CD music
$18.25 Although 2001's Onion Dream isn't Meghan Cary's first release, it is the singer/songwriter's first full-length album; her first release, 1998's New Shoes, was an EP. For recording artists, full-length albums are more of a creative challenge than EPs because the artist needs to hold the listener's attention for a longer period of time. It is easier to be consistent for 21 minutes (which is how long New Shoes lasts) than for 47 minutes (which is how long Onion Dream lasts). But making the transition from an EP (or mini-album, to use a term that was popular in the '70s) to a full-length album was a challenge that Cary was obviously ready for. Onion Dream not only makes good on the promise of New Shoes, it is even stronger. Cary wrote all 11 of the songs on this CD, and her writing is solid on reflective, poignant tracks like "Sorrow's Waltz," "Quiet of the Lie," and "Lori's Song." Many of the tunes are melancholy, although the infectious "You Don't Know Me" demonstrates that Cary is quite capable of providing something that is upbeat and optimistic; it is one of the few tracks that thrives on feel-good optimism. Cary's influences remain the same; 10,000 Maniacs and Indigo Girls were prominent influences on New Shoes, and their influence is equally beneficial on Onion Dream. Cary, who plays acoustic guitar on some of the material, co-produced this CD with Kevin Lacy; thankfully, they don't over-produce. Cary has an earthy, unpretentious approach to folk-rock and Americana, and she does herself a favor by avoiding an overly slick production style on this impressive release. ~ Alex Henderson
"Perhaps the best thing about Cary is that she's neither superficial nor obnoxiously self-possessed....Seek this one out"--- Billboard Magazine"Cary is one of the brightest new faces on the music scene today."--- The Weekly News, Miami"Fresh and intoxicating"--- Street Sound"this extraordinary singer bares the talent of an old soul"--- Cups Magazine"Can the world stand one more storytelling troubadour? If the artist in question is Cary, the answer is a resounding YES."--- Billboard MagazineMeghan Cary is the teller of many stories, and the most beautiful of them all is her own. The New York City based singer/songwriter has steadily ...

$7.89 Born in Western New South Wales in 1973, Davidâs childhood was characterised by changing scenery. His family moved to a different area of New South Wales every few years, from Gulargambone to Wagga Wagga to Dubbo in the west, from Seven Hills in Sydney to the far North Coast near Byron Bay. David began to learn the guitar in Dubbo at the age of nine, instructed by an Irish Catholic nun whose teaching style was firmly rooted in the Folk tradition. David was taught to sing and strum songs like âTom Dooleyâ, âPaddy Works on the Railroadâ and âThe Streets of Laredoâ. David was living in Newcastle by the time he finished school, and began to study Arts at university, as well as continuing to play the guitar and composing songs, largely influenced by The Beatles and Bob Dylan. In 1992 he became guitarist with the The Hanged Man, an Art-Rock band that attracted a loyal local following. The Hanged Man plus its offshoots (Coffinâ Joe and Dog Rex) performed in Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane, playing support for acts such as Died Pretty, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists and the Whitlams. After leaving the band, David became involved in the fertile cultural arts scene in Newcastle, performing and hosting events at the original Newcastle Fringe Festivals (from 1996), which over the years evolved into the annual Electrofringe and This Is Not Art festivals.By 1998 David was performing his songs around Newcastle as half of the acoustic duo Yab-Yum with Rebecca Rushbrook. David relocated to the North Coast of New South Wales in 2001 and began a prolific writing spell, influenced by the creative atmosphere of the area and world events. As well as continuing to listen to his long-time favorites such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and ...
