| | Larry Baskett Poor Boy Blue CD Larry Baskett Discography of CDs
It only takes a few seconds of listening to this CD to realize that Larry Baskett's main influence and idol is Chet Baker. A veteran trumpeter who was playing in the San Francisco area as early as the 1950s but then spent 1962-84 outside of music altogether, Baskett has successfully buried whatever original musical personality he has and instead has chosen to often sound very close to Baker, both musically and vocally. the emphasis is on cool and soft tones throughout the date. Frank Phillps on euphonium sometimes acts as a second voice (a la Gerry Mulligan) and other times as a surrogate trombonist. Randy Vincent (best known for his work with Bebop and Beyond) gets in some fine guitar solos, while bassist Chris Amberger and drummer Harold Jones are utilized solely in tasteful support. However, the main emphasis is on Baskett, who sings on almost half of the pieces in an obviously untrained voice and takes many effective, if obviously derivative trumpet and flugelhorn solos. ~ Scott Yanow On his second CD, Poor Boy Blue, Larry is featured in a quintet setting. Frank Phipps' melodic euphonium playing adds a unique sound to this excellent combo including Randy Vincent on guitar, Chris Amberger on bass and Harold Jones on drums. Check out Larry's first CD, Chalice, and his upcoming effort "Wait Till Spring" at jazzonthevine .
Includes liner notes by Dr. Herb Wong.
Personnel: Larry Baskett (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Frank Phipps (euphonium); Randy Vincent (guitar); Chirs Amberger (bass); Harold Jones (drums).

| | Diane Linscott Alone/Together CD (2003)
Poor Boy Blue album
$18.99 Linscott got a late start as a singer when at age 52, after raising a family, she decided she simply had to pursue her dream of singing professionally. She was accepted, with a talent scholarship, into the Jazz in July program at UMASS where Dr. Billy Taylor was guest director, and from that experience was to start her career. Tragedy struck, however, when her husband of thirty years died suddenly of cardiac arrest the very day she was packed to leave. A year later she reapplied to the workshop at Umass, was accepted again and singing, which had always been her passion, also became her healing. For several years Ms. Linscott worked in Mexico where she performed to SRO audiences from all over the United States and Canada every Sunday night at La Vendemia. She also was featured at several concerts at the Teatro Peralta in San Miguel de allende. Since 1998 she spends her winter season in the Sarasota area and holds forth every Thursday night, December through April, at Islands End in Anna Maria with an outstanding trio. In her five years at Islands End, and at other gigs in the Sarasota area, she has built a large, growing, and loyal contingent of fans. During the summer months she performs with Her Trio at various venues throughout her home state of Maine to equally enthusiastic audiences. Linscott's performance venues include in Maine, The Asticou, The Claremont, The Manor, Ocean Meadows Inn, and the Camden Opera House, Borders, Maine Center for the Arts, Downeast Jazz Festival and frequent live performances on Maine Public Radio. In Florida, Sarasota Jazz Festival, Jazz Caravan, Florida Winefest, VIP concert before Patti Austin, Jane Monheit at the Van Wezel and many private functions. Of her singing Dan Barrett reviewed in The Mississippi Rag, "although most of the singers of jazz's Golden Age are no longer with us, there are a few women singing today who seem to embody the best aspects of their predecessors. Diane Linscott is one of them..."Roger Crane, Writer for Planet Jazz and All About Jazz magazines says, "What a pleasure in this world of ...
