Apparatschik plays russian speed folk from merciless polkas and crooked tangos to sentimental lovesongs.Based on the sound of the accordion and the balalaika, Apparatschik plays a rugged kindof dance music: energetic and fast, but sometimes melancholic too...The bandApparatschik was founded at the end of the 80's as a four-piece acoustic band. With balalaika, accordion, guitar and acoustic bass, they appeared at parties, street festivals and weddings: plugged or unplugged: no problem! As the years went by, the band developed it's own distinctive style; the stages became bigger, and their travels more extensive...By 1994 Apparatschik, now with a new and expanded rhythm section (drums!), had become one of Berlin's most popular bands with sold out concerts in town and growing fame all over the east. Now they will set off for the west: with their fresh and enthusiastic live-appearances and....with their first CD! $15.95 Though she is known first and foremost as a âsit-comâ actress in the U.K., TrĂ©sâ work is truly international and spans the entire entertainment field. As a teenage protĂ©gĂ© of Leonard Bernstein, TrĂ©s attended the Julliard School of Music when she was chosen by him to sing as the principal female soloist in one of the last Great Composers Series at Lincoln Center which he conducted her singing his tour de force 'GLITTER & BE GAY' from Candide and more. She went on to perform in numerous musicals in the U.S. and abroad, including My Fair Lady (Eliza), Camelot (Guinevere), and The Fantasticks (Luisa). In the London revival of The Beggarâs Opera, she made history as the first âAmericanâ to play 'Polly Peachum' in Britain since the musical was first performed in 1728. TrĂ©s went on to call London âhomeâ and establish herself as a well respected TV actress, working with some of the best of British talent. Her U.K. credits include the role of 'young Jean' in As Time Goes By, starring Oscar winner Dame Judy Dench (who plays Jean), Casualty, Hale & Pace, and Murder Most Horrid. Most recently she created the role of 'Carol' in the BBC television comedy My Hero. âGuest starringâ TV roles in the USA include Tales from the Crypt (HBO) and Sherlock Holmes (A&E). Film credits include the role of Robert Downey Jr.âs mistress in Richard III, starring Sir Ian McKellen, and Mouth To Mouth (aka in Europe - Boca ...
| | I Belong To This Band: Eighty-Five Years Of Sacred Harp Recordings CD (2006)
Apparatschik music CDs
$13.35 As a companion CD to the film Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp, I Belong to This Band: Eighty-Five Years of Sacred Harp Recordings collects 30 performances in the Sacred Harp style, recorded as early as 1922 and as recently as 2006. As explained in the liner notes, Sacred Harp singing -- a form of Southern gospel music that's rather obscure to much of the general population -- "is characterized by mass participation, full-voiced singing, lack of instrumental accompaniment, and rotation of song leaders." Most of the material performed dates from before the middle of the 19th century, which helps give even the recent recordings in the genre a haunted, out-of-time feeling, and often the beginning sections are sung with the syllables "fa," "sol," "la," and "mi." Not that it matters much, but it's not the most chronologically balanced overview, with no recordings ...

| | Keni Stevens Living On The Edge CD (2009)
Apparatschik CD music
$12.78 British born soul singer Keni Stevens is the son of a U.S. serviceman and began his career working in a record shop selling deleted catalogues of classic soul and lovers rock/reggae. Keniâs first move into music came in the mid 70âs when he joined as lead singer for the group âRaw Energyâ. âRaw Energyâ members included Alan Cooke and Peter Hinds on keyboards. âRaw Energyâ were signed to Conflict Records but disbanded after 18 months of playing gigs up and down the country. Keni was taken on as A&R man for Conflict Records and being responsible for releasing lovers rock/ rock steady/ reggae classics by artists such as Gregory Isaacs in the UK. Keni also worked as a session singer with artists including Eddy Grant before signing to the Elite label as a solo artist in 1985. Keni released initially two singles on Elite Records âNight Movesâ and âAll Day All Nightâ in 1985 which were well received by the soul crowd and getting picked up by specialist UK radio. This led to much interest in Keni Stevens, who was initially mistaken for being a new US artist. A few majors showed interest at the time, and Polygram Records offered Keni a 2.5 million pound record deal. Keni tells that he declined the offer as he felt he would be restricted by the major and would have to compromise his sound and style to fit the record label, as well as losing his self production. Keni sticking with Elite Records started recording his debut album âBlue Moodsâ. Keni described the sessions as being long stretches in the studio and even doing a full 30 hour recording sessions some days. The initial thoughts of the record label were that the album sounded to mellow for the UK market as at the time UK soul was a more upbeat affair with acts like Loose Ends and Junior breaking the UK charts. Keni states at the time he was determined to release the album with or without the labelâs backing. To test the water âToo much too Soonâ and âCannot Live Without Your Loveâ were released as 12inch singles (Too much too soonâ on Elite Records and âCannot Live Without Your Loveâ on the newly formed Jam Today label ran by Andy Sojka (the man responsible for producing and releasing Level 42's initial singles). To the labelâs surprise Keni was proven right, and so paved the way for the release of the classic âBlue Moodsâ album on the Jam Today label in 1987. The songs on the âBlue Moodsâ album were a very passionate affair and soon found its way on top of most DJ playlists. âCannot live without your loveâ was featured on many top soul compilations at the time i.e. âUpfront 6â (out on Serious Records), and âSpend the Nightâ on âSlow Jams ...
